NJ Driver Accused of Killing Motorcycle Couple After Insect Flew Into Her Car and Caused Her to Lose Control, Police Say

Luthersburg, Pennsylvania — A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges after police say she became distracted by an insect while driving and veered into oncoming traffic, causing a crash that killed two motorcyclists.

Bernadette Cobb, 55, of Brick, New Jersey, was driving east on a two-lane road in Luthersburg at approximately 4:45 p.m. on August 12 when an insect reportedly flew through her open vehicle window.

According to a police affidavit cited by NJ.com, Cobb told investigators that she “freaked out” when she noticed the bug and attempted to swat it away.

During the distraction, she reportedly put her head down “by accident.”

Vehicle Drifted Into Oncoming Lane

Police allege that Cobb’s vehicle began drifting into the opposite lane while she was focused on the insect. Her passenger reportedly attempted to intervene by grabbing the steering wheel and trying to correct the vehicle’s path. The effort was not enough to prevent the collision.

Pennsylvania State Police said Cobb’s vehicle ultimately crashed into a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction.

The impact proved fatal for both people riding the motorcycle.

Motorcycle Couple Killed in Crash

The motorcycle driver was identified as Anthony Sones, 34, while his passenger was Miranda Wormuth, 30. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The deaths have left family and friends mourning a couple who had reportedly spent years together. A GoFundMe created by Wormuth’s family described Sones and Wormuth as partners who had been together for 14 years.

Their deaths have also highlighted how quickly an apparently ordinary driving distraction can turn into a devastating crash.

Driver Arrested at Scene

Cobb was arrested at the scene and later faced multiple criminal charges, including homicide and involuntary manslaughter, according to the report.

She has since posted $100,000 bail.

The charges are allegations, and Cobb remains entitled to the presumption of innocence as the case moves through the legal system.

Investigators are expected to examine the crash circumstances, including the driver’s actions immediately before the collision and the role the insect may have played in the loss of control.

Attorney Calls Crash a “Tragic Accident”

Cobb’s attorney, Brian Manchester, told NJ.com that the collision was a “tragic accident.”

Manchester also questioned the timing of his client’s arrest, saying Cobb was handcuffed before an accident reconstruction had fully examined the crash.

“We will defend her vigorously,” Manchester told the outlet.

The defense is likely to focus on the circumstances surrounding the sudden distraction and whether Cobb’s actions meet the legal requirements for the charges filed against her.

Fatal Reminder About Driving Distractions

The crash demonstrates how even a seemingly minor distraction can have devastating consequences when a vehicle is traveling on a two-lane road.

According to the police account, Cobb was attempting to deal with an insect inside her vehicle when her attention shifted away from the roadway. Her vehicle then crossed into the path of an approaching motorcycle, despite her passenger’s reported attempt to regain control.

For the families of Sones and Wormuth, the consequences were irreversible.

The couple had reportedly shared 14 years together before their lives ended in the Pennsylvania collision. Cobb’s criminal case will now move forward as prosecutors and defense attorneys examine the evidence surrounding the crash.
