Lake Michigan, Indiana — An Indiana school community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 21-year-old teacher who had recently been recognized as “Rookie Teacher of the Year.”
Hannah Zweig, a life skills teacher at John Adams High School in South Bend, died alongside her younger brother, Yosef Zweig, 18, in a drowning accident during a family trip to Lake Michigan.
The tragedy comes only months after the young educator was honored for the impact she made during her very first year in the classroom.
Award-Winning Teacher Remembered for Her Compassion
School officials confirmed Hannah Zweig’s death on Wednesday, describing her as a teacher whose dedication reached far beyond the classroom.
In a message to the school community, Principal James Seitz praised Zweig for her unwavering commitment to students with special needs.
He said she worked tirelessly as a life skills teacher, building meaningful relationships with her students while constantly looking for ways to help them succeed.
Seitz also remembered her as someone who always saw the best in people, calling her a friend to everyone she met and someone whose positive attitude made those around her better.
Honored as ‘Rookie Teacher of the Year’
Just a few months before the tragedy, Zweig received South Bend Community Schools’ “Rookie Teacher of the Year” award during the district’s Teacher of the Year Celebration in April.
Reflecting on the recognition, she described her first year of teaching as both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
She expressed gratitude for the support of her colleagues, school leadership, and the opportunity to work with students who inspired her every day.
In another message shared after completing her first school year, Zweig wrote that teaching had pushed her beyond her comfort zone and taught her lessons no college classroom ever could.
She also emphasized that success isn’t measured only by academic achievement but by the confidence, relationships, and lasting impact teachers help create.
Passion for Special Education Began Early
According to her professional background, Zweig earned a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior University in 2023.
She had also begun pursuing a master’s degree in special education and teaching at Grand Canyon University, continuing her commitment to serving students with special needs.
Principal Seitz recalled first hearing from Zweig approximately two years ago when she emailed him while finishing her degree.
He said her message immediately stood out because of the compassion she showed toward young people, especially students with disabilities.
According to Seitz, it was clear from the beginning that she genuinely cared about helping others.
Family Also Mourning Loss of Younger Brother
Hannah died alongside her 18-year-old brother, Yosef Zweig, during the Lake Michigan incident.
Earlier this year, Hannah had shared in an interview that Yosef was developmentally disabled, and family members often spoke about their close bond.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the drowning, and officials have not publicly explained how the incident unfolded.
As family members, friends, colleagues, and former students continue grieving, many are remembering Hannah not only for the award she received but for the kindness and encouragement she brought into the lives of those around her.
Her legacy, school leaders say, will continue through the students she inspired and the compassion she demonstrated every day in the classroom.
