Allentown, Pennsylvania — A massive six-alarm fire tore through an industrial building in Allentown on Wednesday night, forcing evacuations, damaging nearby homes, and prompting a large-scale emergency response involving firefighters from dozens of departments.
The fast-moving blaze burned for roughly two hours before firefighters brought it under control, though not before it spread beyond the original building and disrupted surrounding neighborhoods.
Authorities are now working to determine what caused the fire.
Massive Fire Engulfs Industrial Building
Emergency crews were dispatched to the 300 block of North Front Street at approximately 8:45 p.m. after reports of a major fire at an old industrial building.
As firefighters battled the intense flames, concerns grew over the stability of the structure.
Officials said crews were eventually forced to pull back from the building because of the risk of structural collapse, shifting to a defensive strategy as flames continued to spread.
The large plume of smoke and fire could be seen from across the area as firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from reaching additional structures.
Nearby Homes Damaged as Residents Evacuate
The fire eventually spread across the street, damaging seven nearby homes. Authorities ordered residents living along the 300 block of Front Street to evacuate immediately.
Police and firefighters assisted families as they left their homes, directing many residents to exit through their backyards to avoid the active fire scene.
People living in surrounding neighborhoods who were not under mandatory evacuation orders were instructed to shelter in place while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.
Officials have not yet released information regarding the number of displaced residents. The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania responded to assist those affected by the fire.
Fire officials also encouraged displaced residents to contact either the Red Cross or the Allentown Fire Marshal’s Office for assistance.
Power Outages Affect Hundreds of Customers
As firefighters battled the blaze, PPL Electric Utilities shut off power in the immediate area to protect emergency crews and reduce additional hazards.
The precautionary outage initially left more than 1,600 customers without electricity.
By early Thursday morning, utility officials reported that the number of affected customers had decreased to approximately 1,000, with restoration efforts continuing as conditions allowed.
The outage added to the challenges facing residents who had already been forced from their homes because of the fire.

Firefighter Suffers Minor Injury
Despite the dangerous conditions, only one firefighter was reported injured during the response. Officials said the firefighter sustained minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
The scale of the emergency prompted a significant regional response, with firefighters from more than two dozen neighboring departments joining Allentown crews in battling the blaze.
Their coordinated efforts helped prevent additional damage and ultimately brought the fire under control after approximately two hours.
Investigation Into Cause Underway
With the flames extinguished, investigators have turned their attention to determining what sparked the massive fire. Officials have not announced a possible cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Fire investigators are expected to examine the damaged industrial building and surrounding area as they work to determine how the blaze began.
In the meantime, residents affected by the fire continue receiving assistance while cleanup and recovery efforts move forward.
