Oakland, California — An early morning crash involving two young brothers, ages 7 and 4, has left a woman fighting for her life and sparked difficult questions about parental supervision and legal responsibility after police said the children took their parents’ vehicle while the adults were asleep.
The shocking incident unfolded on 35th Avenue in Oakland, where surveillance footage and witness accounts captured the moments leading up to the serious collision.
Police Say Young Brothers Took Parents’ Car
According to the Oakland Police Department, the two boys allegedly took their parents’ Toyota sedan while the adults were sleeping and drove away from their home.
Investigators said the children traveled several blocks before the vehicle sped down 35th Avenue, where it struck a woman who was walking her dog.
Following the collision, officers found both children outside the vehicle, while the woman suffered critical injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
Authorities have not released her identity or provided an update on her condition.
Witnesses Describe Horrifying Scene
Neighbors who witnessed the crash said the impact was impossible to ignore.
“It was loud,” witness Lavelle Shah-Marquis said.
“I pray that she’s okay, but it was bad, it was bad.”
He also recalled seeing the two young boys lying on the ground immediately after the collision.
Police said the woman’s dog fled the scene following the crash, and as of Thursday, authorities had not confirmed whether the animal had been found.

Child psychiatrist Dr. Shivani Chmura said responsibility should not be placed on children of such a young age because they are not developmentally capable of understanding the full consequences of their actions.
She explained that children that young may recognize the immediate action they take but are often unable to foresee the chain of events that follows.
Dr. Chmura also recommended counseling for the children, warning that placing blame on them could lead to long-term emotional harm, including feelings of shame.
She described the incident as a tragedy affecting everyone involved, including the injured victim, the children, and their family.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Oakland police continue investigating the circumstances that allowed the children to leave home in the vehicle and whether any additional action will be taken against the adults responsible for supervising them.
Authorities have not announced whether the parents could face criminal charges, and no decisions have been made regarding possible civil proceedings.
