Chicago, Illinois — A Chicago community is mourning the loss of a respected high school basketball coach after Tim Bankston, a longtime mentor known for shaping the lives of countless student-athletes, was found fatally shot inside a home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
As investigators work to determine what happened, family, former students, and community leaders are remembering a man whose influence extended far beyond the basketball court.
Veteran Coach Found Shot Inside Auburn Gresham Home
According to Chicago police, officers responded to a home in the 7600 block of South Emerald Street around 10 a.m. Wednesday, where they found Tim Bankston suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.
Authorities said Bankston was discovered inside the residence, but investigators have not said how long he had been there before he was found.
Police have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect, and the investigation into the fatal shooting remains ongoing.
Family members said Bankston did not live at the home, explaining that the property belonged to one of his friends.

His sister, Karolyn Bankston, described him as someone who constantly supported young people both on and off the basketball court.
She said he had “a very, very generous heart,” while another sister, Jennifer, remembered him simply as “a gentle giant.”
For decades, Bankston served as a mentor to countless boys and girls throughout the community, with many viewing him as a father figure rather than just a coach.

He also expressed confidence that the incident was unrelated to criminal activity involving Bankston.

After starring as a point guard at Simeon Career Academy, he went on to play college basketball before eventually returning to mentor young athletes in the Chicago area.
