Harlem, New York — A teenager was killed and another was injured Thursday night after a motorized scooter carrying the two youths collided with an SUV on a Manhattan street, according to the New York Police Department.
The fatal crash occurred in Harlem and remains under investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what led to the collision.
Police said one of the teens died from severe injuries sustained in the crash, while the second teen was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive.
Collision Happened Near Central Park
According to investigators, the crash occurred shortly before 8:50 p.m. near West 112th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.
Police said the two teenagers, ages 13 and 14, were traveling on a motorized scooter along West 112th Street when the collision occurred.
At the same time, a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 63-year-old man was making a left turn from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard onto West 112th Street.
Authorities said the SUV and scooter collided head-on.
The intersection is located just a few blocks north of Central Park in a busy residential area of Upper Manhattan.
One Teen Dies, Another Suffers Leg Injury
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the crash. Police said the 13-year-old boy suffered a serious head injury during the collision.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The second teen, a 14-year-old boy, was also taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities said he suffered a leg injury and was listed in stable condition. Officials have not publicly released the names of either teenager.
Driver Remained at the Scene
Investigators said the SUV driver remained at the location following the crash and cooperated with responding officers. The driver was not injured. At this stage, police have not announced any criminal charges or arrests related to the incident.
