Scott County, Kentucky — A tragic crash on Interstate 75 in Kentucky claimed the lives of two Tennessee residents after their vehicle collided with a fire engine that was responding to an earlier emergency along the highway, authorities said.
The deadly incident occurred Saturday afternoon while emergency crews were already assisting victims of a separate crash on the southbound side of Interstate 75 near mile marker 141.
According to the Scott County Fire Department, first responders had been dispatched to the original injury crash at approximately 1:35 p.m.
Vehicle Crashed Into Fire Engine During Emergency Response
Officials said firefighters had positioned a fire apparatus at the scene to assist with the initial emergency when another vehicle struck the rear of the fire engine at approximately 2:19 p.m.
The impact caused catastrophic damage to the passenger vehicle, resulting in multiple serious injuries.
Emergency crews immediately began treating those inside the vehicle while additional responders arrived to assist at the scene. Authorities later confirmed that two people died at the scene, while two others were transported to a nearby hospital.
Victims Identified as Tennessee Couple
Officials identified the victims as 61-year-old Darren Paul Nelson, who was driving the vehicle, and 62-year-old Shauna Colleen Nelson, who was seated in the front passenger seat.
According to local reports, the couple was from Knoxville, Tennessee, and was traveling home when the crash occurred. The two passengers riding in the back seat survived the collision and were transported to a local hospital.
Officials later reported that both were in stable condition.
No First Responders Were Injured
Despite the severity of the crash, authorities confirmed that none of the firefighters or other emergency personnel were injured when the fire apparatus was struck.
The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said the collision significantly affected traffic on Interstate 75 as investigators documented the scene and crews worked to remove damaged vehicles.
“No first responders were injured,” the Scott County Sheriff’s Office said following the collision. “Traffic will be impacted for several hours including multiple lane closures.”
Motorists traveling through the area experienced extended delays as multiple lanes remained closed during the investigation.
Investigation Into Crash Continues
Authorities continue to investigate what caused the vehicle to collide with the fire engine during the active emergency response.
Officials have not released additional details regarding potential contributing factors or whether any charges are expected.
The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers emergency responders face while working alongside busy highways and the importance of slowing down and moving over when approaching emergency scenes.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
