Naperville, Illinois — A woman convicted of fatally shooting her fiancé during an argument over alleged infidelity has been sentenced to 38 years in prison, closing a case that prosecutors say included a disturbing Facebook video call moments after the shooting.
The fatal incident happened in Naperville, a western suburb of Chicago, where investigators said an argument between the engaged couple escalated into deadly violence inside their home.
Argument Over Alleged Affair Turned Deadly
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Rosa Lagrone, 40, was found guilty of first-degree murder earlier this year following a four-day trial.
Prosecutors said the shooting occurred on the afternoon of Nov. 6, 2020, when Lagrone and her fiancé, 27-year-old Darnell Manns, were arguing about his alleged relationship with another woman.
Authorities said Manns had begun packing his belongings to leave the home when the confrontation intensified.
During the argument, Lagrone allegedly fired a handgun, striking Manns in the arm and torso. Investigators later determined that the bullet passed through his arm before lodging in his spine, causing catastrophic injuries.
Prosecutors Describe Disturbing Video Call After Shooting
According to prosecutors, Manns was still alive after the shooting. Authorities alleged that while he lay seriously injured on the floor, Lagrone accessed his Facebook account and initiated a live video call with the woman prosecutors said Manns had been dating.
Investigators said Manns could be seen lying in a pool of blood in the background during the call. Prosecutors also alleged the video appeared to show someone kicking Manns twice while he remained on the floor.
The allegations formed part of the evidence presented during Lagrone’s murder trial.
Victim Died Days Later at Hospital
Emergency responders arrived at the residence shortly after the shooting and transported Manns to a local hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, he died three days later from his injuries. Initially, Lagrone was charged with attempted murder because Manns survived the shooting.
However, after his death on Nov. 19, 2020, prosecutors upgraded the case, securing an indictment on first-degree murder charges.
Following deliberations lasting approximately two and a half hours, the jury returned a guilty verdict.
Judge Orders Prison Sentence
The court sentenced Lagrone to 38 years in prison. Under Illinois law applicable to her conviction, she must serve 100% of the sentence before becoming eligible for release.
Following the sentencing, DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said the case illustrated the devastating impact domestic violence can have on families and communities.
He noted that while the prison sentence provides accountability, it cannot undo the loss suffered by Darnell Manns’ loved ones. Berlin also expressed hope that Manns’ family would find strength as they continue coping with the lasting effects of his death.
The case serves as another reminder of how domestic disputes can escalate into irreversible acts of violence with consequences that extend far beyond those directly involved.
