Worcester, Massachusetts — A woman once known for publicly celebrating the work and sacrifices of police officers is now the subject of a police search after a Worcester police officer died inside her home.
The Worcester Police Department announced Tuesday that authorities were looking for Karen Solomon, 58, in connection with the death of a man at her residence.
Local media reported that the man who died was a Worcester police officer. Authorities have not publicly disclosed how the officer died, and the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
Police warned residents that Solomon may be armed as officers continued searching for her.
Investigation Began With Domestic Incident
According to Worcester police, the investigation stemmed from a domestic incident reported around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. A large police presence quickly developed around Solomon’s home as local and state agencies joined the investigation.
Massachusetts State Police were reportedly using a helicopter to search the surrounding area, while a specialized team was being deployed to search nearby woods.
Authorities were also searching the neighborhood for Solomon, who police said was last seen walking toward a local street wearing pajama shorts and a tank top.
The department urged residents not to approach her and instead contact authorities if they see her.
Woman Previously Wrote About Police Heroes
The investigation has drawn additional attention because of Solomon’s history of publicly supporting police officers.
In 2016, Solomon was interviewed about her book Hearts Beneath the Badge, which featured stories about police officers across the country and the ways they serve their communities.
At the time, Solomon said the idea for the book came after one of her children questioned why people sometimes claimed police officers hurt people without justification.
She explained that she wanted to highlight the positive work officers often do behind the scenes.
“They buy meals, they save people’s lives, they put themselves in jeopardy,” Solomon said during the interview.
Her book focused on the sacrifices and acts of service performed by police officers, offering a very different picture from the circumstances surrounding the current investigation.
Solomon Also Wrote About Officers’ Struggles
Solomon’s work involving law enforcement did not stop with Hearts Beneath the Badge. She also co-authored The Price They Pay, which examined the physical and mental challenges faced by police officers.
Her previous connection to the Worcester Police Department was also personal. Solomon had been married to a Worcester police officer when she was interviewed about her book.
That history has added another layer to a case that has shocked people familiar with the family and the neighborhood.
Search Continues Across Worcester Area
Authorities continued searching for Solomon as the investigation developed.
Massachusetts State Police and Worcester officers were working together, with air support and specialized search teams reportedly being used around the neighborhood.
Police have not released a detailed explanation of what led to the officer’s death, and officials have not publicly established the circumstances that prompted the domestic-incident response.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are asking members of the public to avoid taking matters into their own hands. Worcester Police said anyone who spots Solomon should call 508-799-8606 or 911.
For residents in the area, the warning is especially important because police have indicated that Solomon may be armed.
As investigators continue working to determine what happened inside the home, the death of a Worcester police officer and the search for a woman once known for writing about police service have left the Massachusetts community facing a deeply troubling and still-unfolding investigation.
