19-Year-Old College-Bound Soccer Player Dies After Allegedly Being Kicked, Punched and Stomped During Phoenix Game

Phoenix, Arizona — A soccer game ended in tragedy after a 19-year-old player was allegedly attacked by several opposing players during a fight on the field, leaving him critically injured and later dead.

Tumusifu Bazirake, who was preparing to begin college this month, died after the violent confrontation at Sueno Park earlier this month.

His family says the incident began after his team scored a goal, with his brother claiming the opposing players became angry and started fighting.

“We scored on them, and they got mad,” Jeanpaul Bazirake told a local news outlet.

What began as a soccer match allegedly escalated into a prolonged physical confrontation, according to the family.

Brother Says Tumusifu Tried to Protect Him

Jeanpaul said someone from the opposing team began throwing punches before several players allegedly joined the confrontation. He said he was attacked by multiple people, prompting Tumusifu to intervene.

“He was trying to protect me,” Jeanpaul said.

According to the family, the brothers did not know anyone on the opposing team.

Jeanpaul described the attack as lasting approximately 20 minutes, saying the situation became increasingly violent after the initial confrontation. He recalled turning around and seeing his brother on the ground while several people allegedly continued attacking him.

“I tried to turn around, then he was on the ground, and they were just stepping on him while he’s on the ground,” Jeanpaul said.

He alleged that Tumusifu was stepped on, kicked and punched during the assault.

Police Respond to Unresponsive Teen

Phoenix police said officers were called to the soccer field at approximately 8 p.m. on August 6 following a report of an unresponsive man near 43rd Avenue and Hubble Street.

When officers arrived, they learned that the 19-year-old had been participating in a soccer game when a fight broke out. Police said several suspects assaulted Tumusifu before fleeing the scene.

Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded and transported him to a hospital in extremely critical condition.

At that point, investigators were still working to determine exactly how the confrontation unfolded and who was responsible for the teen’s injuries.

Teen Dies Days After Soccer Field Attack

Tumusifu remained hospitalized following the assault.

On Thursday, August 13, he succumbed to his injuries. His death transformed the investigation into a homicide case, according to Phoenix police.

Authorities said the suspects involved in the attack had not been identified and remained outstanding. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made, and police had not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.

Family Left Waiting for Answers

For Tumusifu’s family, the tragedy has raised painful questions about how a soccer game could turn into a deadly confrontation.

The teen was reportedly preparing to start college this month, making his death particularly devastating for relatives who expected to see him begin the next chapter of his life.

His brother’s account suggests that Tumusifu may have become involved in the fight while attempting to protect a family member rather than starting the confrontation himself.

However, police have not publicly confirmed the family’s account of what triggered the fight or identified the people who allegedly attacked Tumusifu.

Investigators are now working to identify those involved and determine what happened during the minutes of violence on the field. Police have asked anyone with information about the confrontation or the individuals involved to come forward.

Until suspects are identified and charges are filed, the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death remain under investigation. The case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an ordinary sporting event can escalate when physical violence erupts.

For Tumusifu’s loved ones, the focus now is on remembering a 19-year-old preparing for college whose life ended after a soccer game turned deadly.
