Wisconsin Son Asked His Dad If They Could Talk, Then Asked for a Hug Before Allegedly Plunging a Knife Into His Neck

Racine, Wisconsin — A quiet conversation between a father and his 18-year-old son allegedly turned into a violent stabbing after the son asked for a hug and then suddenly plunged a knife into his father’s neck, according to police.

Joseph Niemiec is accused of first-degree attempted homicide following the August 12 attack, the Racine Police Department said.

Officers were called around 1 a.m. to the 4200 block of 21st Street after receiving a report of a stabbing. When police arrived, they found Niemiec’s father seriously injured and covered in blood.

The suspect had already fled.

Father Says Son Suddenly Pulled a Knife

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim told investigators he initially believed someone might have broken into the home.

He heard a noise coming from the back door and went to investigate. He soon realized the person entering the house was his own son.

Once inside, Niemiec allegedly asked his father if they could talk.

The two sat together in the kitchen, where Niemiec reportedly spoke about having a “rough go at life.” He allegedly told his father that he had attempted suicide multiple times and did not know what to do.

At some point, Niemiec reportedly went to the bathroom. When he returned, he allegedly asked his father for a hug. According to the affidavit, the situation suddenly turned violent.

“As they went to hug Joseph quickly presented a knife and stabbed [the victim] in the neck,”

Police said the father described feeling “a punch to his throat” before immediately putting his hand over the wound as he stumbled backward.

Victim Allegedly Fought Off Son

The attack reportedly did not end after the first stabbing. Police say Niemiec came at his father a second time, but the victim managed to disarm him and push him away. The injured father then ran from the home while his son allegedly chased after him.

During the escape, the victim reportedly threw the knife into a trash can before reaching a neighbor’s house. He then called 911 for help. When officers arrived, the father was still alert and holding pressure against his neck.

Suspect Flees Wisconsin After Stabbing

Niemiec allegedly escaped the area in a Chevrolet Malibu. Investigators and law enforcement agencies then began searching for him as he traveled far from the Wisconsin crime scene.

Approximately 10 hours after the stabbing, Nebraska State Patrol troopers spotted the vehicle on Interstate 80 near the Alda interchange.

The location was approximately 650 miles from Racine. Troopers arrested Niemiec and transported him to the Hall County Jail, where he remained pending extradition to Wisconsin.

Father Expected to Fully Recover

Despite suffering a stab wound to his neck, Niemiec’s father is expected to make a full recovery, according to police. The case now moves toward the Wisconsin court system, where Niemiec will face the attempted homicide allegation.

The circumstances described in the affidavit have raised questions about what led to the sudden attack, particularly because the confrontation reportedly followed an emotional conversation in which Niemiec allegedly discussed his struggles and past suicide attempts.

Authorities will ultimately present the evidence and allegations through the court process. Niemiec is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The dramatic escape across state lines ended when Nebraska troopers located the vehicle hours later, bringing the nationwide search for the suspect to an end.
