Apopka, Florida — A Florida father who had just dropped his young daughter off for her first day of school was fatally shot while apparently trying to intervene in a roadside confrontation following a vehicle crash, according to authorities.
Daryl Hill, 56, was riding his bicycle home Tuesday morning when he encountered a man and woman arguing near Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads in Apopka, about 20 miles northwest of Orlando.
Crash Leads to Heated Confrontation
According to an arrest affidavit, witnesses told deputies that a pickup truck had crashed into an SUV.
A man later identified as Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26, and a woman got out of the pickup and began arguing. Investigators said Vazquez was yelling at the woman and standing directly in front of her.
Hill, who was passing by on his bicycle, reportedly attempted to separate the two. The situation quickly became physical.
According to investigators, Hill, Vazquez and the woman ended up fighting and fell into some bushes. When they emerged, Hill reportedly began running away.
That’s when investigators say Vazquez went back toward the pickup truck.
Police Say Vazquez Grabbed a Shotgun
Authorities allege that Vazquez retrieved a shotgun from the truck as Hill attempted to get away.
Witnesses told investigators that Hill was running with his hands raised and screaming for help when a gunshot suddenly rang out. Hill fell face-first onto the ground. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died from his injuries.
Vazquez was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
Suspect and Witness Gave Different Accounts
Investigators interviewed Vazquez and the woman involved in the confrontation.
The woman reportedly told deputies that Hill was the aggressor and had pushed Vazquez. When investigators asked her to provide additional details about what happened, she requested an attorney.
Vazquez also claimed that Hill attacked him first. However, deputies said Vazquez gave investigators “many different accounts of the incident.”
He reportedly acknowledged that he had martial arts and wrestling training and claimed he was getting the better of Hill during the physical confrontation.
Vazquez also admitted to investigators that he fired the shotgun. Authorities ultimately charged him in connection with Hill’s death.
Wife Was Tracking His Ride Home
Hill’s family said he had been doing something completely ordinary before the deadly encounter.
His wife told local television station WESH that Hill had just dropped off their 10-year-old daughter for her first day of school.
He then began riding his bicycle home. His wife was tracking his location because she wanted to make sure he arrived safely. But when his phone remained in the same location for approximately an hour and Hill stopped responding, she became worried.
She went home to check on him and instead encountered a crime scene investigation. She said she did not see the actual crime scene, but seeing detectives confirmed her worst fears.
Family Remembers Hill as Someone Who Helped Others
Hill’s death has left his family devastated.
His wife described herself as “very, very angry” over the killing, calling the circumstances “senseless.”
Hill also leaves behind two adult children.
His family said helping others was part of who he was, making his decision to intervene in the roadside confrontation consistent with the person they knew. His wife said she wants him remembered for loving his family unconditionally and for the joy he brought to people around him.
Vazquez is currently being held in the Orange County Jail without bond as the criminal case moves forward.
