Las Vegas, Nevada — A Las Vegas family is searching for a stranger they call a hero after his quick actions during an early morning house fire gave them just enough time to escape safely. The unidentified man reportedly woke the sleeping family, helped battle the flames, and disappeared before anyone had the chance to thank him.
Now, weeks after the terrifying incident, the family hopes to identify the Good Samaritan they believe prevented an even greater tragedy.
Stranger’s Urgent Warning Woke the Sleeping Family
The fire broke out shortly before 5 a.m. on July 5 at the family’s home in the Las Vegas Valley.
Homeowner Danna Shabtai said she had gone to bed after asking children in the neighborhood to stop setting off fireworks near her home during the Fourth of July celebrations.
At approximately 4:51 a.m., she was suddenly awakened by someone repeatedly ringing the doorbell and pounding on the front door.
“My dog started barking, so I woke up and I stumbled to the door,” Shabtai recalled.
When she opened it, she said the man urgently shouted “Fire! Fire!” while pointing toward the back of the house. As she turned around, she saw what she described as a wall of orange flames through the home’s French doors leading to the backyard.
Family and Stranger Worked Together to Protect Neighbors
Realizing the fire was rapidly spreading, the family sprang into action.
Shabtai said her sister grabbed the family’s garden hose and began trying to slow the flames while she picked up her 14-month-old son and ran next door to warn neighbors who were still asleep.
She recalled banging on windows and doors, shouting for them to wake up. According to Shabtai, two women joined her in alerting the neighboring household until everyone inside safely evacuated.
Meanwhile, the unidentified stranger continued helping.
She said he retrieved a garden hose from the neighboring property and attempted to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes.
According to the family, his actions likely protected multiple homes and several pets before firefighters arrived.
Family Believes the Stranger Prevented a Tragedy
Looking back, Shabtai believes the timing of the stranger’s arrival made all the difference.
She said if he had not happened to drive past the home at that exact moment, the fire could have grown much larger before anyone inside realized there was danger.
The family has since turned to social media in hopes of finding the man so they can personally thank him.
Calling him “an angel” and “a hero,” Shabtai said he had every opportunity to continue driving but instead chose to stop and help complete strangers.
She believes his decision saved not only her own family but also neighboring households from potentially devastating consequences.
Fireworks Suspected, but Cause Remains Under Investigation
Shabtai believes the fire may have started after fireworks were set off nearby earlier that night.
She said she noticed debris landing on a neighbor’s gazebo and remembered seeing what appeared to be a glowing ember drifting over a nearby roof before everyone went to bed.
She suspects the ember may have smoldered for several hours before igniting the fire, though officials have not determined an official cause.
Following the incident, Shabtai shared emotional posts online thanking the unidentified passerby while expressing frustration over the use of neighborhood fireworks.
Although her own family was able to remain in their home after the fire, she said neighboring families were displaced because of the damage.
The search for the mystery hero continues, with the family hoping they will one day be able to thank the man whose selfless actions changed their lives forever.
