St. Louis, Missouri — A Missouri father is facing serious criminal charges after police say he abandoned his infant child in the middle of a busy roadway, falsely told the child’s mother the baby had been left at a police station, and later led officers on a dangerous vehicle pursuit through St. Louis.
According to court records, 36-year-old Christopher Sean Pearson has been charged with first-degree child endangerment and resisting arrest by fleeing, creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death.
Authorities allege the series of events unfolded on July 15 and ended with Pearson’s arrest after an extensive police chase.
Witnesses Say Infant Was Left in Active Traffic
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers responded to the intersection of Goodfellow Boulevard and Natural Bridge Road after receiving reports of an infant in a car seat left in a driving lane.
Witnesses told investigators they saw the driver of a blue Tesla stop, leave the child in the roadway and drive away.
One witness initially believed the car seat was empty before realizing an infant was inside. The witness then quickly moved the child out of the roadway and into a safer location before emergency responders arrived.
Fortunately, the infant was rescued before being struck by passing vehicles.
Police Say Father Lied About Baby’s Location
Investigators say shortly after leaving the scene, Pearson received a phone call from the child’s mother, who wanted to know where their baby was.
According to court documents, Pearson allegedly told her he had left the child outside a police station. Police later located the blue Tesla, which records showed was registered to Pearson.
Officers who recognized the vehicle attempted to stop him, but investigators say he immediately sped away.
Chase Ended After Tesla Crashed Through Fences
According to a separate probable cause affidavit, Pearson allegedly ignored multiple traffic signals and stop signs while driving at high speed, nearly causing crashes with other motorists.
Police attempted to stop the Tesla using spike strips, but investigators say Pearson successfully avoided them.
The pursuit finally came to an end after officers say the Tesla reached a dead end. According to police, Pearson jumped a curb, drove through two separate fences, crossed a yard and another sidewalk before finally stopping.
Investigators also allege that during the chase he threw a handgun from the moving vehicle. After Pearson was taken into custody, officers searched the Tesla and reported finding two additional firearms inside.
Judge Orders Suspect Held Without Bond
Court documents state that Pearson has a criminal history dating back to 2007, including multiple failures to appear in court.
Because of that history and the allegations in the current case, prosecutors argued he posed both a flight risk and a danger to the community.
Following his initial court appearance, a St. Louis judge ordered Pearson held without bond, finding probable cause to believe he might not appear for future court proceedings and could pose a threat if released.
The allegations against Pearson remain accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not released additional information about the infant’s condition, but the child was safely removed from the roadway after witnesses intervened.
