Phoenix, Arizona — A dispute over an unpaid $50 electric bill has led to a murder charge in Arizona after authorities say a 76-year-old man died weeks after his younger roommate allegedly beat him with a construction helmet during an argument inside their shared home.
Investigators say the victim suffered devastating head injuries in the April assault and never recovered, eventually dying from complications linked to the attack.
Police Say Argument Escalated Into Violent Assault
According to investigators, 31-year-old Troy Yazzie was arrested this week and charged with second-degree murder following the death of his roommate.
Court documents state the incident occurred on April 30 during what police described as a verbal argument inside the pair’s Phoenix residence.
Authorities allege the victim had previously given Yazzie $50 to pay the home’s electric bill. When the bill reportedly remained unpaid, the victim asked for his money back.
Police say that request sparked the confrontation.
According to the arrest affidavit, Yazzie allegedly became angry and repeatedly struck the victim in the face with a white construction helmet, causing severe injuries.
Victim Suffered Serious Head Injuries
Emergency responders transported the 76-year-old victim to the hospital immediately after the alleged assault because of the severity of his injuries.
Investigators said doctors diagnosed him with multiple facial fractures and brain bleeds.
The victim remained hospitalized for more than two months, but despite medical treatment, authorities say he died earlier this month from medical complications related to the blunt force trauma.
His identity has not been publicly released by law enforcement.
911 Call Captured Moments After the Attack
According to the arrest affidavit, the victim managed to call 911 after the alleged assault. During the emergency call, he reportedly provided dispatchers with details about what had happened.
Investigators also noted that a man’s voice could be heard in the background asking, “Are you calling the cops?”
Police later identified that voice as allegedly belonging to Yazzie. The victim was taken directly to the hospital following the call.
Suspect Allegedly Acknowledged Victim’s Age
Detectives interviewed Yazzie as part of their investigation. According to court documents, he did not claim he acted in self-defense during the incident.
Investigators further allege that Yazzie acknowledged he knew the victim was elderly and understood that striking an older person could result in serious injury or death.
Those statements became part of the evidence included in the arrest affidavit supporting the murder charge.
Murder Charge Filed After Victim’s Death
Following the victim’s death, prosecutors upgraded the case and charged Yazzie with second-degree murder.
He is currently being held in custody on a $1 million bond while awaiting further court proceedings. The allegations against Yazzie remain pending, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not announced when the next hearing in the case will take place as the investigation continues.
