Ottawa County, Michigan — What began as a gathering among friends near Lake Michigan ended in tragedy after two young men lost their lives during a water emergency that unfolded along the shoreline over the weekend.
Authorities identified the victims as Philip Lochirco, 24, of Warrenville, Illinois, and Jalen Shaffer, 26, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. According to investigators, the pair were part of a group of friends spending time together near the Pigeon Lake Channel when the incident occurred on Saturday, June 13.
The heartbreaking event has left family members, friends, and community members mourning the loss of two lives taken far too soon.
Fun Day Near the Water Takes a Dangerous Turn
Officials said members of the group decided to jump from the south pier of the Pigeon Lake Channel into Lake Michigan.
At some point after entering the water, Lochirco reportedly began struggling and appeared unable to stay afloat. As concern quickly spread among the group, several friends entered the water in an attempt to help him.
Among them was Shaffer, who immediately joined the rescue effort after realizing his friend was in distress. What began as a rescue attempt soon became an even larger emergency.
Rescue Attempt Ends in Tragedy
Authorities said Shaffer also encountered trouble while trying to help Lochirco and disappeared beneath the water. Friends and bystanders rushed to assist as the situation escalated.
According to investigators, members of the group managed to bring one of the men back toward shore while nearby witnesses provided flotation devices and called emergency services.
First responders from multiple agencies quickly arrived at the scene, including deputies, Grand Haven Township Fire personnel, and members of the Ottawa County Marine Patrol.
Emergency crews worked to locate and recover both men from the water. Despite extensive rescue efforts and lifesaving measures, both Lochirco and Shaffer were pronounced dead at the scene.
