Jaffrey, New Hampshire — A hiking trip to one of New England’s most popular mountains ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old Massachusetts man died following a medical emergency on Mount Monadnock.
Authorities identified the hiker as Joshua Luth of Lancaster, Massachusetts, who was found unresponsive on a trail Saturday afternoon. Despite efforts by fellow hikers and emergency responders, he could not be revived.
The incident remains under investigation as officials work to determine what caused the sudden medical emergency.
Hiker Found Unresponsive on Mountain Trail
According to New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife officials, the emergency unfolded at approximately 4:11 p.m. on June 13.
Good Samaritans hiking along the Cascade Link Trail discovered Luth lying unresponsive less than a mile from Park Headquarters on Poole Road in Jaffrey.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the hikers immediately began CPR and contacted emergency services.
Their quick actions helped initiate lifesaving efforts before first responders arrived, but despite those efforts, Luth was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not disclosed how long he may have been on the trail before being found.
Large Emergency Response Mobilized
The medical emergency triggered a significant rescue response involving multiple agencies from across the region.
New Hampshire Fish and Wildlife said personnel from several fire departments, ambulance services, law enforcement agencies, and emergency response organizations assisted in the operation.
Among those responding were members of the Jaffrey, Rindge, Peterborough, Dublin, Troy, Keene, New Ipswich, and other regional emergency services, along with medical transport teams and mutual aid organizations.
The extensive response highlights the challenges emergency crews face when responding to incidents in mountainous and remote outdoor locations.
While rescuers worked quickly to reach the scene, officials ultimately confirmed that the young hiker could not be saved.
Cause of Medical Emergency Still Unknown
Authorities have not released details regarding the nature of the medical incident that led to Luth’s death.
The New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is continuing its investigation and will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Until that process is completed, officials have not provided additional information about any possible medical conditions or circumstances surrounding the incident.
