Triple-Digit Heat Index Set to Return as Temperatures Soar Heading Into the Holiday Weekend

Kansas — Summer heat is expected to intensify heading into the holiday weekend, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s and humidity pushing the heat index above 100 degrees on both Thursday and Friday.

Forecasters say plenty of sunshine, warm overnight temperatures, and gusty southerly winds will create hot and muggy conditions, making it important for anyone with outdoor plans to take precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Thursday Brings Hot and Breezy Conditions

Thursday is expected to feature ample sunshine with breezy conditions developing during the afternoon.

High temperatures will reach around 92 degrees, but humidity will make it feel even hotter. Forecasters expect heat index values to climb just over 100 degrees during the warmest part of the day.

South-southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph, will continue throughout the afternoon.

Anyone spending extended time outdoors is encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible.

Warm and Muggy Thursday Night

Temperatures will remain well above average Thursday night. Skies will be partly cloudy, with warm and breezy conditions continuing overnight.

Lows are forecast to remain near 75 degrees, offering little overnight relief from the daytime heat.

Southerly winds between 10 and 15 mph, with occasional gusts up to 20 mph, will keep the air moving but won’t significantly cool temperatures.

Friday Forecast: More Heat Ahead

The hot weather pattern will continue into Friday as the holiday weekend approaches. A mix of sunshine and clouds is expected throughout the day, with afternoon temperatures climbing to around 93 degrees.

Humidity will once again push the heat index to around or just above 100 degrees, making it feel considerably warmer than the actual air temperature.

South winds will continue between 10 and 15 mph, maintaining the warm and humid air mass across the region.

Holiday Weekend Outlook

The combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and warm overnight conditions means heat safety will remain important for anyone attending outdoor events, cookouts, or Independence Day celebrations.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, children, and pets, who are especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.

With plenty of sunshine expected and no major weather disruptions in the short-term forecast, the main concern heading into the holiday weekend will be the persistent heat and humidity.
