Milton, Massachusetts — A Massachusetts community is mourning the loss of a recent high school graduate after an outing with friends ended in tragedy at a popular swimming destination near Boston.
Authorities confirmed that Kayron Garcia Costa, 18, died following a drowning incident at Houghton’s Pond in Milton on Saturday evening, less than two weeks after celebrating his graduation from Quincy High School.
The heartbreaking loss has left classmates, teachers, family members, and friends grieving a young man remembered for his character, determination, and positive impact on those around him.
Teen Went Missing While Swimming with Friends
According to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, Costa was swimming with friends at Houghton’s Pond at approximately 7 p.m. on June 20 when he disappeared underwater.
Officials said the teenager failed to resurface, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Multiple agencies, including the Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery Team, the Marine Unit, the Milton Fire Department, and other local emergency crews, joined the search effort.
After an extensive operation, rescuers located Costa and transported him to a Boston-area hospital.
Despite lifesaving efforts, he was later pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed the incident remains under investigation by state police detectives.

In a message shared with families, Quincy High School Principal Keith Ford described Costa as a respected student who left a lasting impression on both teachers and classmates.
“Kayron was an awesome student at Quincy High School.”
Ford said Costa earned the respect of those around him through his character and determination.
“He gained the respect of his classmates and teachers by being a man of great character.”
The principal also noted that Costa had received a Recognition of Effort Award, highlighting his commitment and contributions during his time at the school.
Principal Shares Emotional Tribute
As news of the tragedy spread, Ford shared a heartfelt tribute honoring the young graduate’s life.
“When I had lunch with him he expressed how much Quincy High meant to him and his family.”
The principal encouraged students and community members to remember Costa’s legacy and the positive influence he had on others.
“Kayron, thank you for allowing us to get to know you during your time at QHS. To everyone who knew Kayron, may his legacy live on.”
Ford concluded his message by offering condolences to the family.
“My prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”
