Honduras — What was supposed to be a memorable first cruise vacation turned into a medical nightmare for a Louisiana woman after a shore excursion accident left her seriously injured and facing tens of thousands of dollars in emergency medical expenses.
According to a fundraiser created to help cover medical costs, 28-year-old Kirsten Lindsey suffered a catastrophic genital injury during a rope swing excursion in Honduras while traveling on a Carnival cruise with her boyfriend, Blake Ford.
The incident occurred on the third day of the couple’s vacation and quickly escalated into a medical emergency that required multiple surgeries and an air evacuation back to the United States.
Rope Swing Accident Led to Serious Injury
Ford said the injury happened after what he believes was a malfunction involving the rope swing’s retrieval or tag line.
According to the fundraiser, the line allegedly tightened between Lindsey’s legs moments before she dropped from the swing, causing severe injuries.
Initially, Lindsey believed she had only suffered a minor scratch and attempted to continue the excursion despite being in pain.
However, the situation rapidly worsened during the trip back to the cruise ship.
Ford said the swelling increased dramatically, the pain became unbearable, and Lindsey eventually became unable to walk without assistance. She reportedly required a wheelchair to return to her cabin.
Medical Emergency Escalated Onboard the Cruise Ship
Lindsey was treated for several hours in the ship’s medical center, but according to the fundraiser, her condition continued to deteriorate.
She reportedly remained in the onboard medical facility for approximately 26 hours and received an initial medical bill of about $3,500, which the couple says did not include physician services, medications or additional procedures.
Ford described the severity of the situation in the fundraiser.
“During that time, her pain became so severe that she could barely move, and at one point the medical staff told me they were trying to keep her awake because she would stop breathing whenever she drifted off from the pain medication.”
As Lindsey’s condition worsened, the couple said they were presented with several options for further treatment, including remaining onboard, traveling to another location for care, or arranging an emergency air evacuation to the United States.
Couple Says They Faced More Than $50,000 in Evacuation Costs
According to Ford, the couple chose medical air transport because they believed it offered Lindsey the best chance of receiving specialized treatment.
He said they were required to pay a $20,000 deposit for the evacuation and another $30,000 upon arriving in the United States, bringing the total transportation costs to roughly $50,000.
The couple was transported by ambulance to an airport before Lindsey was flown by private medical aircraft to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she underwent emergency surgery.
Because of the extent of her injuries, Ford said Lindsey later traveled back to Louisiana by car instead of flying.
Recovery Continues After Multiple Surgeries
After returning home, Lindsey received additional treatment at CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center, but was later readmitted following another emergency room visit.
Ford said doctors in Louisiana were surprised by the severity of her injuries and continued providing specialized care.
In an update shared on social media, he wrote:
“They were completely shocked she was even discharged from the last hospital so early but now thank god we’re home and with OUR doctors and not the ones Carnival sent us to!”
He also added:
“Everyone that’s seen the injury has never seen anything like it, but they are doing everything they can to prevent permanent damage to her…grapefruit sized lady bits.”
Lindsey has since undergone a second surgery and continues recovering from the injuries sustained during the excursion.
While the fundraiser continues to help cover mounting medical expenses, the incident serves as a reminder that accidents during vacation excursions can quickly become life-changing emergencies, leaving travelers with both physical and financial challenges.
