Garrett County, Maryland — A Pennsylvania family’s journey turned into a devastating tragedy after a freak highway accident involving an airborne deer killed a young father and left his wife with severe, life-altering injuries.
Raymond Craft, 33, was driving a Subaru Forester on a Maryland highway on the evening of July 27 when another vehicle struck a deer.
The impact sent the animal flying through the air and directly into the Craft family’s SUV. According to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, the deer was “thrown airborne through the windshield” of the Subaru.
The SUV then left the westbound shoulder, traveled over an embankment and struck a tree head-on.
Young Father Dies at Crash Scene
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Raymond was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife, Cara Craft, was sitting in the front passenger seat and suffered serious injuries in the collision. She was airlifted to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.
Their 2-year-old son, Anthony, was also in the vehicle. Remarkably, the toddler survived the crash with only minor physical injuries.
The family was left facing an unimaginable situation: Anthony survived, but would now grow up without his father, while his mother faced a long and difficult recovery.
“His sudden absence leaves a void that can’t be filled,” Cara’s uncle, Joseph Kane, wrote in a GoFundMe campaign created to help the family.
Beloved Pennsylvania Teacher Suffers Life-Altering Injuries
Cara is known in her Pennsylvania community as a music teacher at Whitehall High School in Whitehall Township. Her injuries from the crash were described as severe and life-altering.
Kane said Cara had already undergone multiple surgeries to stabilize her condition and faced additional medical treatment, surgeries and intensive physical therapy.
“Cara requires ongoing surgeries, intense physical therapy and medical care to survive and rebuild her life,” he wrote.
The tragedy has deeply affected her students and the Whitehall school community. One of her students, Meili Chen, shared an emotional message about her teacher while speaking with a local news outlet.
“I just want her to know that we’re always going to be there for her, no matter what, as a community,” Chen said.
She added that she wanted Cara to understand “how much we love her” and how deeply she has impacted people throughout Whitehall.
Toddler Survives But Loses His Father
While Cara endured serious injuries, her young son Anthony escaped the crash with relatively minor physical injuries.
Kane described his survival as “an absolute miracle.” But the toddler now faces the heartbreaking reality of growing up without his father.
“By an absolute miracle, their 2-year-old son, Anthony, survived the impact with only minor physical injuries,” Kane said, adding that the boy “now faces a future without his father and needs his mother to heal.”
Family members have been providing updates as Cara’s recovery continues.
Cara Begins Next Phase of Recovery
In an August 14 GoFundMe update, Kane shared some encouraging news about Cara’s condition.
After receiving intensive care at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, Cara was able to leave the hospital and move to a rehabilitation center closer to her home in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
Kane said she had made good progress and was beginning the next phase of her recovery. One especially emotional milestone came when Cara and Anthony were reunited.
“Cara and Anthony were also reunited — and little Anthony is medicine for his mom,” Kane wrote.
The family expects Cara’s recovery to remain challenging. She will need rehabilitation and additional time with relatives as she continues healing from the extensive injuries.
But Kane said Cara remains strong and determined despite everything she has endured.
“While the future path of recovery is challenging, Cara is a very strong and determined woman,” he wrote.
For a family that lost a husband and father in a bizarre split-second accident, the road ahead will be difficult. But with support from family, students and the wider community, Cara is now focused on recovering and rebuilding her life alongside her young son.
