Sheboygan, Wisconsin — What should have been the start of an exciting new chapter after turning 18 quickly became a fight for survival when a Wisconsin teenager suffered devastating injuries in a farming accident that nearly cost him both of his legs.
Just one day after celebrating his birthday, Mason Kramer was seriously injured while working on a farm in Sheboygan on June 18, leading to a dramatic rescue, multiple surgeries and a recovery journey that he says has exceeded even his doctors’ expectations.
Farm Accident Left Teen Fighting for His Life
According to Kramer, the accident happened while he was cleaning out a silo at the farm where he works. He said he lost his balance, causing both of his legs to become trapped inside a silo unloader, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
The accident also caused Kramer to lose approximately 25% of his body’s blood, a level he described as life-threatening.
“I lost about 25% of my [body’s] blood which is a life threatening and even deadly amount to [lose],” Kramer wrote in a Facebook update.
Emergency crews airlifted him by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital, where surgeons immediately began life-saving treatment.
Three Major Surgeries and an Incredible Recovery
Doctors performed three surgeries totaling approximately 23 hours in an effort to save Kramer’s legs.
Although the recovery process is expected to take months, Kramer says his progress has amazed the medical professionals caring for him.
In a recent Facebook post, he shared that he has already begun walking with assistance despite the seriousness of his injuries.
“I have made a recovery that some of the Doctors, Therapists, Surgeons and Nurses have never seen,” he wrote. “I have already walked 100 feet with assist on a walker and have transferred inside and out of a car, and went up stairs.”
His determination and positive attitude have become a source of inspiration for both his family and the community supporting him.
‘I Made It Out Alive’
Looking back on the accident, Kramer says there were moments when he feared he might lose both his legs—or even his life.
Speaking about the terrifying experience, he expressed gratitude for the emergency responders and medical team who helped save him.
“I made it out alive. I still have my legs and my feet. So, it’s just a blessing how it turned out,” Kramer said. “The Flight for Life team and then all the doctors that did my surgeries, they’re the reason why I still have my legs.”
He also thanked the countless people who have offered prayers, encouragement and financial support during his recovery.
“If it wasn’t for EVERYBODYS prayers I wouldn’t be here making this post. God Bless each and every one of you.”
Looking Forward to Returning to the Farm
A fundraiser has been created to help Kramer and his family cover the expenses associated with his lengthy recovery.
Despite the physical challenges that still lie ahead, Kramer says his motivation remains strong because he hopes to return to the work he loves.
He explained that farming has always been a major part of his life, especially working with cattle and repairing machinery.
Kramer believes maintaining a positive mindset has played a major role in his recovery and says he refuses to give up on returning to life as an active 18-year-old.
His remarkable determination, combined with the support of his medical team, family and community, continues to fuel what many describe as an extraordinary recovery journey.
