Columbus, Ohio — An Ohio man has been sentenced to 13 to 18½ years in prison after admitting responsibility in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, a case that began with a reported bathtub drowning but later turned into a homicide investigation after medical examiners uncovered evidence of fatal injuries.
The sentencing closes a case that remained active for more than six years before the defendant was finally brought back to Ohio to face justice.
Man Pleads Guilty in Toddler’s Death
Dioblis Williams, 26, was originally charged with murder in connection with the death of 2-year-old Ja’Mir Jones.
This week, Williams pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering children, leading to a sentence of between 13 and 18½ years in prison, according to court proceedings.
The plea resolved the long-running criminal case without a trial.
Initial 911 Call Claimed Child Had Drowned
The investigation began on March 25, 2020, when officers with the Columbus Division of Police responded to a home after Williams called 911, reporting that a child had drowned in a bathtub.
When first responders arrived, Ja’Mir was not breathing. The toddler was rushed to a local children’s hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
At first, Williams reportedly told officers the child had accidentally drowned while in the bathtub.
However, investigators quickly began questioning that account.
Autopsy Revealed Fatal Injuries
According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the autopsy found no evidence that Ja’Mir drowned. Instead, medical examiners determined that the child’s death resulted from blunt force trauma to the abdomen.
The examination also documented bruises on the child’s face, neck, and torso, while finding that his lungs showed no signs consistent with drowning.
Based on those findings, authorities ruled the case a homicide. Investigators later alleged that Williams had been babysitting Ja’Mir while the child’s mother was away.
According to a court affidavit, Williams became angry after the toddler had an accident in his diaper and repeatedly struck the child, causing the fatal injuries.
Arrest Came More Than Five Years Later
After the case remained unresolved for years, the U.S. Marshals Service announced that Williams was believed to be living in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Authorities eventually located him during an operation involving local police.
According to officials, a Framingham Police Department K-9 officer noticed an individual walking along a sidewalk who appeared to be wearing a wig.
After taking a closer look, officers concluded the individual was Williams, whom federal and local authorities had been searching for. He was taken into custody without incident and later extradited back to Ohio to face the pending charges.
Sentence Brings Case to a Close
With Williams’ guilty plea, the years-long criminal case has now reached its conclusion.
Although the original murder charge was resolved through the plea agreement, the court imposed a prison sentence of 13 to 18½ years for involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.
The case serves as a reminder of how forensic evidence can play a critical role in uncovering the true circumstances surrounding a child’s death, even when an initial explanation suggests an accident.
