Tampa, Florida — Two severely malnourished dogs are recovering after deputies discovered them in alarming condition inside a Tampa apartment, leading to the arrest of the woman responsible for their care. Authorities say the animals were suffering from extreme weight loss and medical issues consistent with prolonged neglect, prompting an animal cruelty investigation.
Deputies Discover Dogs in Disturbing Condition
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), deputies responded to a call for service at approximately 1:45 p.m. on July 14 at an apartment in the 800 block of East 120th Avenue.
When deputies entered the residence, they found two dogs in the care of 38-year-old Bernice Smith.
Investigators said the animals were in severely neglected condition, with their ribs, hips, and spinal bones visibly protruding due to extreme weight loss.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, deputies requested assistance from Hillsborough County Animal Services, which responded to the apartment and removed both dogs for immediate medical evaluation and treatment.
Veterinarians Say Dogs Showed Signs of Prolonged Neglect
Following the rescue, both animals underwent examinations by veterinary professionals at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center.
According to veterinary reports cited by the sheriff’s office, both dogs were suffering from emaciated body conditions along with multiple medical problems consistent with long-term neglect.
Officials did not release additional details about the dogs’ specific medical conditions, but investigators said their overall health strongly indicated they had been deprived of proper care over an extended period.
The rescued dogs remain under veterinary supervision as they receive treatment and begin the recovery process.
Caregiver Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges
After reviewing the evidence gathered during the investigation, deputies arrested Bernice Smith, 38, on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
Authorities allege Smith failed to provide the dogs with the basic care necessary to maintain their health and well-being.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the investigation remains active, and no additional information has been released regarding the case at this time.
Sheriff Calls the Case Preventable
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister described the case as a tragic reminder of the responsibility pet owners have to care for animals that depend entirely on them.
He said animals rely on humans to provide essential necessities such as food, water, shelter, and medical care, adding that the suffering endured by these dogs was completely preventable.
The sheriff also praised detectives, Hillsborough County Animal Services, and the Pet Resource Center for their work in rescuing the animals and pursuing accountability in the case.
As the investigation continues, officials hope the rescued dogs will recover with proper medical treatment and care after enduring what authorities describe as prolonged neglect.
