Major Pet Store Chain Announces Closure of 75 Locations Nationwide as Tractor Supply Makes Major Business Shift

Brentwood, Tennessee — Tractor Supply is making significant changes to its retail strategy, announcing plans to close approximately 75 Petsense by Tractor Supply stores nationwide while scaling back its future expansion plans. Company executives say the move is designed to improve profitability, strengthen the pet business, and focus investments on higher-return opportunities.

Tractor Supply to Close 75 Petsense Stores

The announcement came as part of Tractor Supply’s latest quarterly earnings report, where executives outlined plans to streamline the company’s pet retail division.

As of late June, the company operated 209 Petsense by Tractor Supply locations across 23 states. Closing about 75 stores would reduce the chain’s footprint by more than one-third.

Chief Executive Officer Hal Lawton said the decision followed what he described as a disciplined review of the business.

According to Lawton, the closures are intended to improve returns, simplify operations, and allow the company to invest in areas offering stronger long-term growth.

The company has not yet released a list of which Petsense locations will be affected or when the closures will take place.

Why the Company Is Shutting Down Stores

During the earnings call, Lawton explained that the stores selected for closure were experiencing negative four-wall cash flow.

That means the affected locations were not generating enough sales to cover store-level operating expenses, including rent, employee wages, inventory, and other day-to-day costs.

Rather than continuing to absorb losses, Tractor Supply plans to redirect those financial resources toward strengthening other parts of the business.

Lawton said eliminating underperforming stores would create a healthier financial foundation for the Petsense brand moving forward.

Company Says Remaining Pet Business Will Be Stronger

Despite the closures, Tractor Supply executives expressed confidence in the future of the company’s pet division.

Lawton said he believes the remaining Petsense stores will form “a very strong, profitable Petsense business” that complements Tractor Supply’s broader pet services, including Allivet and VIP Petcare.

He also emphasized that the changes will not slow growth in Tractor Supply’s core pet product business, noting that the company’s primary retail stores remain separate from the Petsense chain.

Chief Financial Officer Kurt Barton echoed that message, saying the restructuring is expected to create a healthier and more profitable business while strengthening the company’s ability to serve pet owners through its integrated network of products and services.

Expansion Plans Also Being Scaled Back

In addition to the Petsense closures, Tractor Supply is adjusting its future growth strategy.

The company now expects to open approximately 85 to 90 new stores in 2027, down from its previous goal of 100 new locations.

Executives said the savings from opening fewer stores will instead be invested in Project Fusion, an initiative focused on remodeling and improving existing Tractor Supply locations to drive stronger performance.

Rather than prioritizing rapid expansion, the company says it is concentrating on maximizing returns from its current store base while investing in projects expected to deliver stronger long-term value.

While customers can still expect Tractor Supply to continue expanding, the latest strategy reflects a greater emphasis on profitability, operational efficiency, and enhancing existing stores instead of simply increasing the total number of locations.
