San Antonio, Texas — A Texas community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a 2-year-old girl whose disappearance triggered an Amber Alert before ending in tragedy just hours later. Investigators are still working to determine how Aryana Trevino Martinez left her home and ended up in a nearby creek, where her body was discovered early Monday.
The case has left neighbors searching for answers as loved ones prepare to honor the little girl’s memory at a community vigil.
Search Ended in Tragic Discovery Near Family Home
According to authorities, Aryana Trevino Martinez was last seen around 7:45 p.m. Sunday at her family’s home in San Antonio.
When she could not be located, police received a missing persons report at approximately 8 p.m., prompting an Amber Alert as officers and volunteers searched the neighborhood throughout the night.
About four hours later, shortly after midnight, search efforts came to a devastating end when the toddler was found in a creek located roughly 500 yards from her home.
The Amber Alert was later canceled following the discovery.
Neighbor Recounts Emotional Moment He Found the Toddler
Among those helping search was 22-year-old Uriel Ramirez, whose family joined neighbors looking for the missing child. His mother, Anna Marie Ramirez, said thick weeds made searching difficult, but her son continued exploring the creek area.
Standing on nearby rocks, Uriel spotted what appeared to be the little girl in the water.
Without hesitation, he jumped into the creek and carried her back to those gathered nearby. Fighting back tears while recalling the moment, Anna Marie said her son immediately acted after seeing Aryana.
Uriel later described the discovery as something he still struggles to process.
He said he felt as though something guided him directly to where she was, before returning to tell his mother that he had found the missing child.
Surveillance Video Becomes Key Part of Investigation
Police say surveillance footage appears to show Aryana walking toward the creek before she disappeared.
Investigators have not said how the toddler managed to leave her home, and officials continue examining the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Authorities have also not yet determined the child’s official cause of death, pending the outcome of the investigation. Officials have not announced whether foul play is suspected, emphasizing that the case remains active.
Community Left Searching for Answers
The tragedy has deeply affected residents throughout the neighborhood.
