Springfield, Illinois — An Illinois woman is facing criminal charges after authorities say she left her two young children, including a toddler who requires specialized medical care, with people she had only recently met before allegedly disappearing for several hours and later denying she even had children.
According to investigators, 25-year-old Nakeia Morris was arrested after police found her early Monday morning following an overnight search sparked by concerned residents caring for her children.
The case has raised concerns about child safety after authorities said the children were left with strangers who had no knowledge of the toddler’s medical needs.
Children Were Left With New Acquaintances After Park Visit
According to authorities, the incident began Sunday evening at Comer Cox Park in Springfield, where Morris met at least two people while their children were playing together.
Police said the interaction appeared friendly, and the residents invited Morris, her 7-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son to their home so the children could continue playing.
However, investigators allege that around 10:30 p.m., Morris left the residence without telling anyone where she was going.
The homeowners reportedly tried contacting her throughout the night. According to police, Morris later sent a text message around 2:54 a.m., saying she was on her way back.
Authorities say she never returned.
Residents Called Police After Hours Passed
As the hours continued to pass without any sign of the children’s mother, the residents contacted the Springfield Police Department at approximately 5:10 a.m. Monday.
When officers arrived, they learned the two children had remained at the home overnight while Morris’s whereabouts were unknown.
Authorities said the situation was especially concerning because the 1-year-old boy relies on a feeding tube, but the residents had no information about his medical condition, feeding schedule or other care instructions.
Police said the residents acted out of concern for the children’s safety after realizing they had no way of properly caring for the toddler’s medical needs.
Mother Allegedly Denied Having Children
Roughly 40 minutes after officers responded, police located Morris’s vehicle.
According to investigators, Morris was sitting in the passenger seat and appeared to be under the influence. When officers questioned her about the children, authorities allege she responded by saying she did not have any children.
Police subsequently arrested Morris and transported her to the Sangamon County Jail.
Charges Filed as Investigation Continues
According to jail records, Morris has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and endangering the life or health of a child.
Officials have not released additional details explaining where Morris had been during the overnight hours or whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
Court records indicate that a court date had not yet been scheduled as of the latest available information.
The case remains under investigation as authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and the welfare of the two children.
