San Francisco, California — A Nevada man accused of killing multiple kittens in two states is facing animal cruelty charges after authorities say he fatally abused a kitten in San Francisco before attempting to evade arrest days later.
The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) identified the suspect as 33-year-old William Ohlson of Reno, Nevada. Investigators allege he was involved in a disturbing incident on July 1, when a kitten was allegedly tortured to death before the suspect fled the area carrying the animal’s remains.
The arrest comes as authorities continue investigating whether Ohlson is connected to several other kitten deaths reported in Nevada.
Police Say Kitten Was Fatally Abused Near Market Street
According to the SFPD, officers launched an investigation after receiving reports of animal abuse in the early morning hours of July 1.
Authorities said the suspect was seen entering a bank ATM vestibule in the 1800 block of Market Street while carrying a kitten. Police allege the animal was violently abused and killed before the suspect left the location with its remains.
Following the incident, San Francisco Animal Care and Control joined the investigation as detectives worked to identify and locate the suspect.
Arrest Followed Search Warrant at San Francisco Hotel
Investigators later obtained a search warrant and served it at a hotel located on the 100 block of Fell Street on July 14, where authorities located Ohlson.
Police also released surveillance footage that they say shows the suspect attempting to escape by climbing onto the roof of the hotel after officers arrived.
According to authorities, the escape attempt was unsuccessful, and officers took Ohlson into custody.
He was booked into San Francisco County Jail No. 1 on charges including animal abuse and neglect as well as resisting or delaying arrest, according to the SFPD and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators Link Suspect to Additional Kitten Deaths
Authorities say the San Francisco case may not be an isolated incident. According to KRON4, investigators believe Ohlson has also been connected to several kitten deaths in Washoe County, Nevada.
The outlet, citing the Reno Police Department, reported that the suspect is accused of adopting kittens before later recording videos allegedly showing the animals being killed.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew described the Market Street incident as “truly a sickening act,” according to the report.
Investigation Continues Across Two States
Following his arrest on July 14, Ohlson was released before appearing for arraignment on July 20. Authorities later confirmed he was booked into the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, July 23, as the investigation expanded.
Officials have not publicly identified an attorney representing Ohlson, and the allegations against him have not been proven in court.
Police say the investigation remains active and are asking anyone with relevant information to come forward.
