Miami, Florida — A routine evening jog turned into a terrifying ordeal for a 20-year-old man after he says two unleashed pit bulls attacked him and his dog in Miami, leaving him bloodied and injured while the dogs’ owner now faces multiple criminal charges.
The incident happened on July 15 near Northwest 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, where Evan Motlong says he was out running with his dog when the attack suddenly unfolded.
Authorities have since arrested the alleged owner of the dogs as the investigation continues.
Runner Says He Tried to Save His Dog
Motlong said the terrifying encounter began when the two pit bulls charged toward his dog.
“When I saw the dogs run after my dog — all I could think about was saving her,” Motlong said.
Calling his pet a member of his family, he added:
“That’s my baby. That’s my child.”
According to Motlong, the pit bulls quickly pinned his dog to the ground.
“Just like that I see his two pit bulls on top of my dog, biting her. She’s screaming and yelping in pain.”
As he tried to separate the animals and called police for help, the situation allegedly became even more violent.
Victim Alleges Dog Owner Ordered Attack
Motlong claims the dogs’ owner encouraged the animals to attack him while he was attempting to rescue his pet.
He also alleged the man physically assaulted him after he fell to the ground.
“This dude hit me when I was on the ground, and I was unconscious.”
Motlong said he suffered a serious bite to his arm while trying to pull one of the pit bulls away from his dog.
He later summed up his feelings about the incident by saying:
“I just want to get justice for myself and my dog.”
Witness Video Captured Aftermath
A witness recorded video showing Motlong lying on the ground with blood running from his head after the attack. According to reports, the footage appears to show the dogs’ owner walking away from the scene with the animals.
The video also allegedly shows the man kicking Motlong’s cellphone before leaving the area. Motlong said no one should have to fear being attacked while simply walking or exercising with their pet.
“People shouldn’t have to look over their shoulder wondering if their [dog]… is going to get attacked or potentially killed.”
He also claimed that comments on social media suggested other people had previously encountered similar behavior involving the same individual, though those claims have not been independently verified by authorities.
Suspect Arrested, Multiple Charges Filed
Police later identified the alleged owner of the pit bulls as 44-year-old Jonte Jack.
According to authorities, Jack has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, battery and resisting a police officer.
The allegations against Jack have not yet been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Meanwhile, Motlong continues recovering from his injuries while hoping the criminal case will provide accountability for what he says happened that evening.
