Las Vegas, Nevada — A routine afternoon shift turned tragic when a Five Below employee was fatally shot inside the store after a suspect allegedly entered the business specifically looking for him.
The deadly incident occurred on June 17 at a Five Below location on North Rainbow Boulevard, leaving family members searching for answers and authorities continuing their search for the person responsible.
Police say the suspect remains on the run as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the fatal confrontation.
Suspect Allegedly Sought Out Specific Employee
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the retail store shortly after 4:30 p.m.
Investigators said the suspect entered the business and began looking for a particular employee who was working at the time.
After locating the worker, a confrontation occurred inside the store. Police said the encounter escalated into a physical altercation before the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and fired a shot.
The victim, later identified by family members as Brandan Lucas, suffered a gunshot wound and was found inside the store when officers arrived.
Despite emergency response efforts, Lucas was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family Believes Jealousy Motivated the Shooting
Relatives say they believe the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding involving one of Lucas’ co-workers.
According to family members, the suspect was allegedly the partner of another employee and may have believed Lucas was involved in a relationship with that person.
Lucas’ cousin, Shekiera Wright, said the family does not believe he personally knew the suspect.
“I don’t think he knew the suspect at all,” Wright said.
She suggested the situation may have developed after communications between Lucas and a co-worker were misinterpreted.
According to family members, a text message exchange was allegedly taken out of context, leading to suspicions that ultimately escalated into violence.
Community Mourns Loss of Young Employee
A fundraiser created in Lucas’ memory described the shooting as a senseless act driven by jealousy.
“Brandan Lucas was tragically taken from us in a senseless act of violence and jealousy,” the fundraising page stated.
Friends and family continue to mourn the loss of a loved one whose life was cut short while simply doing his job. Wright said the tragedy has permanently changed the family.
“This went way too far and our family’s life is forever affected,” she said. “We’re never going to be the same.”
The loss has also shaken those who knew Lucas and members of the local community who were stunned by the violence.
Suspect Remains at Large
Following the shooting, investigators said the suspect fled the store on foot before officers arrived. Authorities have not announced an arrest and continue searching for the individual involved.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Section.
The investigation remains active as law enforcement works to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
