Wayne County, Utah — A family hiking trip in southern Utah ended in unimaginable tragedy after a sudden flash flood claimed the lives of five family members, including a respected fire captain, his wife and their three sons.
Authorities say the family was visiting Sunglow Campground, located in a scenic red rock canyon near Bicknell, when heavy rainfall triggered powerful floodwaters that swept through the area on Friday.
Search and rescue crews spent hours recovering the victims, marking one of the region’s most heartbreaking weather-related tragedies in recent memory.
Flash Flood Swept Through Popular Canyon
Emergency responders were called to the campground late Friday after the body of a young boy was discovered in a flood wash.
Search teams continued working through the night, eventually recovering the remaining four victims late Friday and into Saturday, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials believe the family was caught in rapidly rising floodwaters caused by heavy rainfall.
“It is believed the family fell victim to flooding caused by heavy rains,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
The sudden nature of flash flooding in narrow canyon areas can leave little time for people to reach safety, even when storms appear to be several miles away.
Fire Department Confirms Captain Spencer Long Among Victims
Although local authorities initially did not publicly identify the victims, the Provo Fire Department later confirmed that Captain Spencer Long was among those killed.
The department released an emotional statement mourning the loss of one of its leaders and his family.
“We are absolutely heartbroken by the death of Captain Spencer Long and his family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing official process, we will not be commenting further at this time.”
According to family friends, the victims also included Spencer’s wife, Katrina Long, and their three sons — Reid, Thayne and Gage.
Community Rallies Around Surviving Daughter
The family’s daughter, Lydia, did not accompany her parents and brothers on the excursion and is the family’s sole surviving child.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by family friend Bree Nielson has already raised more than $218,000 toward a $250,000 goal to help Lydia with future expenses as she begins rebuilding her life after the devastating loss.
In the fundraiser, Nielson remembered Spencer and Katrina as devoted parents who always put their family first.
“Spencer and Katrina were loving, devoted parents whose greatest joy was their family,” Bree Nielson wrote. “They touched the lives of so many with their kindness, generosity, and unwavering love.”
She added that while no amount of financial support can replace Lydia’s family, the donations serve as a reminder that she is not facing this tragedy alone.
Tributes Continue Following Heartbreaking Loss
Katrina Long was also remembered by Summit Medical Spa, the company she co-founded, which praised her leadership, compassion and commitment to helping others.
“Katrina was an exceptional leader, an inspiring businesswoman, and an extraordinary person whose generosity and love for others touched countless lives,” the company shared. “Our hearts are with all of their loved ones as we grieve the unimaginable loss of Katrina, her husband, and their three beautiful boys.”
The tragedy has renewed awareness about the dangers of flash flooding in Utah’s canyon country, where water levels can rise rapidly after heavy rain, even in areas where the weather initially appears calm.
