Summit, Mississippi — Family members, friends and community supporters gathered Monday to celebrate the life of Nolan Xavier Wells, the 18-year-old Mississippi football player whose disappearance and death have drawn national attention and prompted renewed calls for answers.
During an emotional funeral service, Rev. Al Sharpton announced a $100,000 reward for new information related to Wells’ death, saying the family deserves a full understanding of what happened after the teenager disappeared during a Fourth of July boat trip.
The reward, Sharpton said, is intended to encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward as investigators continue examining the case.
Sharpton Says ‘Somebody Knows Something’
Speaking before mourners, Sharpton acknowledged that many questions surrounding Wells’ death remain unanswered.
He told those gathered that the search for truth should continue while urging anyone with knowledge about the events surrounding Wells’ disappearance to speak with investigators.
“Somebody knows something,” Sharpton said, drawing applause from those attending the service.
Sharpton also revealed that actor and producer Tyler Perry will provide half of the $100,000 reward, while also helping cover the costs of Wells’ funeral.
The funeral drew several notable attendees, including filmmaker Spike Lee, former NFL player Terrell Owens, and numerous faith leaders from across the country.
Parents Remember a Loving Son and Talented Athlete
Throughout the service, Wells’ parents shared heartfelt memories of their son, describing him as a caring young man who made others feel welcomed and supported.
His mother, Christine Wonsley, reflected on the positive impact he had on everyone around him.
“He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued,” she said. “He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belong.”
His father, Elmore Wonsley, became emotional while remembering the countless hours they spent reviewing football film and practicing together.
“I nicknamed you Mr. Cool Hands because it seemed like you were catching a touchdown every game,” he said through tears.
Wells, who would have celebrated his 19th birthday next month, played wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College and dreamed of eventually competing for a Division I football program before pursuing the NFL.
Investigation Continues as Questions Remain
According to investigators, Wells traveled to Horn Island with a group of former high school friends on July 4 but never returned to the mainland with them.
Authorities later recovered his body off the island’s coast two days later.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously said initial interviews suggested Wells chose to remain on the island while his friends believed he would find another ride back. Officials have also stated that the group has been cooperating with investigators.
Despite those statements, the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance have continued to generate public attention and calls for additional transparency.
During his remarks, Sharpton questioned several aspects of the case, including why Wells’ phone and keys were reportedly left with friends and why authorities appeared to dismiss the possibility of foul play early in the investigation. At the same time, he urged the public not to jump to conclusions before all evidence is reviewed.
Family Awaits Autopsy Results
Following the funeral, family attorney Ben Crump said both the official autopsy and an independent autopsy remain pending.
Crump also said he is working with local prosecutors to examine Wells’ cellphone and confirmed that investigators plan to present the completed case to a grand jury once the investigation concludes.
Leading mourners in a chant of “Nolan’s life mattered,” Crump said the family remains focused on learning exactly what happened during the final hours of the teenager’s life.
For Wells’ loved ones, Monday’s service was both a celebration of his life and another step in their ongoing search for answers as the investigation continues.
