Connecticut — A devastating motorcycle crash in Connecticut has left two families mourning after an off-duty police officer and his girlfriend were killed when authorities say a woman driving a Jeep crashed into their Harley-Davidson in the early morning hours. The driver is now facing multiple criminal charges related to the deadly collision.
Woman Faces Multiple Charges Following Fatal Connecticut Crash
According to the Danbury Police Department, Melissa Ramirez, 27, has been charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle in connection with the deaths of Bridgeport Police Officer Cooper Whiteside, 38, and Brittany Anne Islami, 34.
Ramirez also faces charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane. Authorities said she was held on a $500,000 bond following her arrest.
Crash Happened During Early Morning Motorcycle Ride
Police said the fatal collision occurred around 2:45 a.m. on July 13 along Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury, Connecticut, about 65 miles north of Manhattan, New York.
Investigators allege that Ramirez was driving her Jeep when it collided with the Harley-Davidson motorcycle carrying Whiteside and Islami.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. Reports from local media indicated that the Jeep sustained extensive front-end damage, highlighting the severity of the impact.
Ramirez reportedly suffered serious injuries in the crash. Police said she had to be removed from the vehicle before being transported to a hospital for treatment.
Victims Remembered for Their Lives and Dedication
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief as loved ones remember the lives of the two victims.
According to her obituary, Brittany Anne Islami worked as a caretaker and personal assistant and was the mother of three children, ages 12, 10, and 7.
Her memorial described her as someone who “was always the life of the party and lit up every room she walked into,” adding that she was special in a way only those closest to her could truly understand.
Officer Cooper Whiteside was also remembered for his lifelong commitment to public service.
His memorial states that he dreamed of becoming a police officer from a young age and pursued that goal with determination. Beyond law enforcement, he was known as a talented violinist and pianist, a certified rescue diver, an outdoor enthusiast, and someone who loved making others laugh.
His obituary also praised his work in uniform, saying that after only two years on the Bridgeport Police Department, he had become “an officer of distinction,” serving with integrity, humility, and compassion.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the crash beyond the charges filed against Ramirez. The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing, and prosecutors are expected to move forward with the case in court.
