Chez Xue, a popular restaurant in downtown Foster City known for dishes such as green onion pancakes, Godfather’s noodles and cilantro beef, is now drawing attention for a message posted on its website that reminds parents to keep their children under control while dining.

Restaurant Says It Is Family-Friendly—But Not a Playground

The policy makes it clear that families are welcome, but says children are expected to behave appropriately while inside the restaurant.

According to the notice, children should remain seated at all times and be respectful of other guests enjoying their meals.

The restaurant also warns that running around, shouting, or making excessive noise with utensils will not be tolerated, and families who fail to follow the rules could be asked to leave.

Other examples included a child allegedly carving into a tabletop and another breaking a teacup while playing on booth seating. The restaurant said those families were billed for the damages.

While the individual amounts varied, the restaurant emphasized that the policy is intended to encourage responsibility rather than generate revenue.

Owner Says It’s About Respect, Not Money

Speaking about the viral attention, owner You You Xue said the policy reflects a commitment to maintaining a pleasant dining experience for everyone.

According to the restaurant owner, the issue is not about recovering the cost of broken items but about encouraging respect for the business and other guests.

“It’s not about the $5, it’s a matter of principle. I’m not short $5. For us, it’s about respecting the restaurant, respecting other guests.”

The owner also shared an additional statement emphasizing that families remain welcome at the restaurant.

“Chez Xue has always been and will continue to be a welcoming place for families to gather and enjoy our delicious Chinese cuisine. We ask parents to do their jobs so that we can do ours.”
