Lexington, Kentucky — An 11-year-old Kentucky boy is being recognized as a hometown hero after courageously diving into a swimming pool to rescue an unconscious man who appeared to be drowning at a Lexington apartment complex.
The dramatic rescue happened around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, when Avory Woolery noticed a man lying motionless beneath the water. While others nearby appeared unsure of what to do, the young boy said he knew he couldn’t stand by and watch.
His quick decision to act may have helped save a life.
Young Boy Didn’t Hesitate to Jump Into the Water
According to Avory, he spotted the man completely submerged and immediately realized the situation was serious.
Rather than waiting for someone else to respond, the 11-year-old grabbed his goggles and jumped into the pool.
“I was like, somebody’s gotta do something. No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater. I grabbed him up,” Woolery said.
The young rescuer said the man appeared to be unconscious beneath the water and was “almost shaking,” making it clear that every second mattered.
Despite his age, Avory remained calm and focused as he pulled the victim toward the surface.
Rescue Continued After Victim Was Pulled From Pool
Once Avory brought the man up, another person at the pool rushed over to help move him onto the pool deck. The rescue efforts continued while someone called 911 and others tried to keep the man alive until emergency responders arrived.
Recalling those tense moments, Avory explained what happened next.
“His friend, I believe, put him on the floor and started doing CPR on him to try and save him the best he could, until somebody called 911,” Woolery recalled.
Emergency crews soon arrived at the apartment complex and took over the rescue.
Victim Hospitalized as Community Praises Young Hero
The Lexington Fire Department said the rescued man was transported to a hospital in serious condition. Officials did not release additional details about his identity or injuries.
For Avory, however, helping someone in need was simply the right thing to do.
“There was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such,” Woolery said.
His selfless actions quickly captured attention online, where many people applauded the young boy for showing extraordinary courage in a life-threatening emergency.
