Chino, California — A Southern California transit bus driver was violently attacked while on duty after a passenger allegedly launched an unprovoked assault aboard an Omnitrans bus, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Robert Kirkwood of Pomona, was arrested Wednesday following a police search that involved surveillance footage and an aerial helicopter unit.
Investigators have not released a possible motive for the attack, which was captured on the bus’s onboard security cameras.
Surveillance Video Captures Violent Assault
Authorities said the incident occurred aboard an Omnitrans bus in Chino, though officials have not disclosed the exact location or time of the attack.
Surveillance footage released by investigators shows Kirkwood reaching into his pocket before appearing to throw an object toward the driver.
Moments later, he moves farther into the bus, maneuvers around the protective glass barrier near the entrance, and allegedly begins repeatedly striking the driver in the face and head.
The video shows the driver attempting to defend himself by extending one hand, but the suspect continues the assault before eventually walking away from the front of the bus.
The disturbing footage has become a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Police Used Helicopter to Track Down Suspect
Following the assault, Chino police immediately broadcast a description of the suspect to responding officers.
Authorities also relied on the bus’s surveillance video and assistance from a police helicopter to locate Kirkwood.
Video released by the Chino Police Department shows the suspect walking along a sidewalk while air crews directed officers toward his location from above.

When Kirkwood noticed police vehicles approaching, investigators said he attempted to run away on foot.
His escape was short-lived, as officers quickly caught up with him and placed him under arrest without further incident.

Police said investigators searched Kirkwood after taking him into custody and discovered drug paraphernalia in his possession.
Authorities have not said whether the items played any role in the attack, and no motive has been released as the investigation continues.
Kirkwood was booked on suspicion of felony assault.
