Fort Lauderdale, Florida — With the new school year just days away, families across South Florida are getting a helping hand from community organizations working to make sure students have the supplies they need.
At Fort Lauderdale High School, the Peanut Butter Jelly Project recently filled tables with backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils and other essentials for children preparing to return to class.
For families already balancing everyday expenses, the assistance could make a meaningful difference as another school year gets underway.
Students Prepare for a New School Year
The supply distribution took place during the final weekend before the new school year, giving students an opportunity to pick up the materials they need before heading back to the classroom.
Among the students looking forward to the new year was Valeria Ruiz, who is preparing to begin fifth grade.
Ruiz said she was excited about returning to school, describing it as a place where students can make friends while continuing to discover and learn new things each year.
The event was designed to help make sure students can begin the school year feeling prepared rather than worrying about whether their families can afford every item on their school lists.
Organization Has Helped Families for a Decade
For 10 years, Peanut Butter Jelly Project founder Brooke Waltzer has worked to provide school supplies and other assistance to families who need additional support.
Waltzer said school supply lists can become a significant expense, with some families facing $250 to $300 in costs before the school year even begins.
For households already dealing with rising everyday expenses, those costs can force difficult choices.
Waltzer explained that money spent on school supplies can sometimes mean families have to choose between paying another household bill and purchasing the items their children need for school.
By providing backpacks and supplies directly, organizations like the Peanut Butter Jelly Project are helping remove some of that financial pressure.
Free School Lunch Rules Are Also Changing
The new school year is bringing another major change for families in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The universal free lunch program has ended for many students, meaning not every school will automatically provide free meals to all students.
In Broward County, 141 schools will continue offering free lunch, while 121 schools in Miami-Dade County will continue participating in the program.
Students attending campuses that do not qualify will not necessarily lose access to free or reduced-price meals. Instead, parents will need to submit an application so their household can be evaluated for eligibility.
That means families may need to take action before or during the school year to determine whether their children qualify for meal assistance.
Community Support Becomes Especially Important
As students return to classrooms across South Florida, community organizations are stepping in to help families manage the costs and challenges that come with a new school year.
For students, receiving a new backpack filled with supplies can be about more than simply having pencils and notebooks. It can provide a sense of confidence and readiness on the first day of school.
For parents, the assistance can help reduce some of the financial pressure that arrives every August.
