Santa Cruz, California — A 16-year-old rookie lifeguard who risked his own life to save a young boy from dangerous ocean conditions has received an unforgettable honor from the very show that helped make lifeguards famous. Ryder Williams was invited to the set of the upcoming Baywatch reboot, where he received a special gift recognizing his bravery.
Teen Lifeguard Became Hero After Dramatic Rescue
Williams became an overnight hero after responding to a dangerous situation at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz on July 25.The teenage lifeguard rushed into the pounding surf to rescue 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, who was struggling in the water.
The rescue highlighted the risks lifeguards face while protecting swimmers, particularly when powerful surf can quickly turn a routine day at the beach into an emergency.
Williams’ actions soon attracted attention far beyond Santa Cruz. His bravery was praised publicly, including by President, who announced that the young lifeguard would receive a high civilian honor.
But another group also wanted to recognize what Williams had done.
‘Baywatch’ Star Gives Teen His Own Jacket
Williams and his parents were invited to the set of the upcoming Baywatch television reboot on the final day of production Thursday.
There, actor Stephen Amell personally praised the teenager for his courage before giving him a memorable gift — one of Amell’s own red ‘Baywatch’ crew jackets.
The moment prompted cheers and applause from everyone around them.
Amell also told Williams that he would be welcome to visit the set again and joked that the teenager could show the cast how things are done when it comes to lifeguarding.
For Williams, the recognition came from a show closely associated with the profession he has chosen to pursue.
Show Says Williams Represents What ‘Baywatch’ Stands For
The show’s team said Williams’ actions reflected the values that have long been associated with the Baywatch name.
Matt Nix, executive producer and showrunner, praised the teenager as a real-life hero whose actions demonstrated bravery and selflessness.
A post shared by the show described Williams’ welcome as “a hero’s reception” and thanked him for reminding people what the iconic red lifeguard uniform represents.
The original Baywatch franchise has become synonymous with lifeguards, ocean rescues and protecting beachgoers.
Original ‘Baywatch’ Lifeguard Praises Teen
Greg Bonann, a lifeguard and co-creator of the original Baywatch television series, also recognized Williams. Bonann said the show has always celebrated men and women who dedicate themselves to protecting the lives of others.
He added that the 16-year-old rookie lifeguard had reminded people why that mission remains important. A photo shared after the visit showed Williams proudly wearing his new red jacket alongside members of the show’s cast.
Teen Says Experience Reinforced His Calling
Despite the sudden attention, Williams said the experience has not changed why he became a lifeguard.
Instead, he said it has reinforced his desire to help people and learn more about the ocean.
Williams described the experience as “amazing”, explaining that he enjoys being able to help others while continuing to learn about the beach and what it takes to become a good lifeguard.
The upcoming Baywatch reboot is scheduled to premiere in early 2027.
For Williams, however, his appearance on the show’s set represents more than Hollywood recognition. It is a celebration of a teenager who stepped into dangerous water when someone else needed help — and came away having made a potentially life-saving difference.
