Laguna Beach, California — A heartbreaking search for a missing 5-year-old girl has come to a tragic end after authorities confirmed that her body was recovered days after she was swept into the ocean by powerful waves along the Southern California coast.
Officials identified the child as Amada Mia Brown, who disappeared on the evening of June 9 after rough surf pulled her, her mother, and a sibling into the water near Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach.
The discovery comes after an extensive search operation involving multiple agencies and challenging ocean conditions.
Child Found During Early-Morning Search
According to Laguna Beach Marine Safety officials, Amada’s body was located during an aerial survey conducted early Thursday morning.
Authorities said she was found approximately 250 to 300 yards offshore near Christmas Cove, roughly a quarter mile from the location where she was last seen being swept away.
Rescue personnel recovered the child with assistance from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol.
In a statement, Laguna Beach Marine Safety confirmed that the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Coroner Division positively identified the recovered child as the missing swimmer reported on June 9.
Officials said Amada’s family was notified immediately following the identification.
Father Remembers His Daughter
As the community mourns the loss, Amada’s father, Aaron Brown, shared emotional memories of his daughter.
He described the 5-year-old as a joyful child who loved spending time at the beach and was comfortable around the water.
“It’s sad this happened to her. She didn’t deserve it,” Aaron told a news outlet.

Mother and Sibling Were Rescued
The tragic incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. on June 9 when Amada, her mother, and a sibling were caught in rough ocean conditions and pulled into the water.

The mother and sibling were successfully rescued and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Officials later confirmed both were released after receiving medical care.
Laguna Beach Marine Safety Chief Kai Bond praised the individuals who stepped in during the emergency.
“Their actions undoubtedly prevented further loss of life,” Bond said.
Dangerous Ocean Conditions Complicated Search Efforts
Officials noted that search crews faced extremely difficult conditions while searching for the missing child.
According to authorities, large waves, powerful currents, and poor underwater visibility created significant challenges throughout the operation.
The incident occurred during a period when forecasters had warned beachgoers about hazardous surf conditions across Southern California.
The National Weather Service had issued alerts predicting waves between 4 and 7 feet, with some sets reaching up to 9 feet, along with a high risk of dangerous rip currents along portions of Orange County and San Diego County.
