Bakersfield, California — A viral video that appeared to show an Amazon delivery driver taking a family’s cat from their property has taken an unexpected turn after the driver publicly claimed the animal actually belongs to him.
Joshua Gonzalez, the former delivery driver at the center of the controversy, says he did not steal the cat at all. Instead, he insists he recognized the feline as his family’s long-lost pet while making a routine package delivery and simply brought it home.
The dispute has sparked intense debate online, with both sides firmly standing by their version of events as authorities continue investigating the case.
Driver Says He Immediately Recognized the Cat
The controversy began after doorbell camera footage showed Gonzalez delivering a package to a home in Bakersfield before picking up a cat and walking away.
The video quickly spread online, leading many viewers to believe the animal had been stolen. However, Gonzalez says there is much more to the story.
According to him, the encounter happened during a normal delivery route when he heard a familiar meow and looked down at the cat sitting near the home.
“I was just doing my regular route. I approached the house. I got Brenda’s package, and I took it like a normal day,” Gonzalez said.
He claims he instantly recognized the cat based on several unique characteristics.
“I recognized it was my cat because of its distinct forehead design, the eyes, and how the body was set. I knew it was my cat. So I just grabbed him and walked off.”
Adoption Records Presented as Evidence
Gonzalez has since released documentation that he says proves ownership of the cat.
According to the records, the feline was adopted on October 9, 2025, and was originally selected for his 7-year-old daughter. The former driver says he provided those documents to his employer after the incident gained attention.
Despite his explanation, Gonzalez says he was informed that his employment had been terminated.
“My manager calls me. Says to come pick up my check before Monday or Tuesday and that I was being terminated,” Gonzalez said.
Amazon later confirmed that Gonzalez is no longer authorized to deliver packages on the company’s behalf.
Amazon Responds as Investigation Continues
In a statement, Amazon said it had been in contact with the driver’s employer and would continue cooperating with authorities.
“We’ve been in contact with the driver’s employer and the driver is no longer allowed to deliver Amazon packages. We’ll continue to work with law enforcement and will defer to them for details as they investigate.”
The company has not commented further on the ownership dispute.
Meanwhile, no criminal charges have been filed against Gonzalez, although local investigators say the case remains open.
Cat Ownership Remains at the Center of the Dispute
The central question in the case remains simple: Who actually owns the cat?
Gonzalez disputes claims that the animal is named Junie, the name used by the woman who says she has cared for the cat for the past five years.

Instead, Gonzalez says his family never officially named the pet but had considered calling it Spartan. He recently shared a photograph showing the cat at home with his family and insists the animal recognized him immediately.
“She’s at home right now. With all of her toys. She’s not scared. She’s happy. She recognizes me.”
However, Brenda Wilson continues to reject Gonzalez’s claims and maintains that the cat belongs to her family. Wilson has also stated that Gonzalez previously lived in the same neighborhood, adding another layer to the unusual dispute.
Authorities Still Working to Determine the Facts
While the viral footage initially appeared straightforward, the conflicting claims and ownership documents have complicated the situation.
Gonzalez acknowledges that the video has generated negative reactions but insists he acted only because he believed he had found a missing family pet.
“I didn’t do anything bad, but get my cat back. And it’s now in the rightful home. It’s back where it belongs.”
For now, investigators are continuing to review the evidence as both parties maintain ownership of the cat.
Until authorities reach a conclusion, one of California’s most unusual viral stories remains unresolved.
