Niantic, Connecticut — What was meant to be the highlight of a family’s 40th wedding anniversary celebration turned into a terrifying ordeal after a Connecticut man was attacked by a shark while snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Bahamas. Despite suffering serious injuries, the 69-year-old is now back home recovering—and says he has no plans to swim with sharks ever again.
Anniversary Adventure Took a Frightening Turn
John Schweizer, 69, was enjoying an adventure cruise with his wife, Marcy, and their adult sons, Tom and Joey, when the incident occurred on Friday, July 24.
The family had joined a guided snorkeling excursion to observe Caribbean reef sharks, an activity they expected would be one of the most memorable parts of their anniversary vacation.
Instead, the outing quickly turned into an emergency. John said one of the sharks suddenly grabbed his left shin and pulled him underwater.
“It was so fast, so immediate that you knew it happened. No doubt about it,” he recalled.
Family Reacted Quickly After the Attack
According to John, his son Tom spotted a shark approaching beneath him moments before the attack.
Initially, confusion set in.
John said his wife thought he was joking after Tom shouted that his father had been bitten. Once John climbed back onto the boat, however, it became immediately clear that the injuries were serious.
Family members and crew members worked together to stop the heavy bleeding, using multiple towels and tourniquets until medical help became available.
John credited the quick response with helping stabilize his condition.
Emergency Treatment Required 30 Stitches
After returning to the cruise ship, an emergency physician treated John’s injuries.
Doctors closed the wounds with 26 stitches in his left leg and four additional stitches in one of his hands, where he was also injured during the frightening encounter.
He was later transported to a hospital in Miami for further evaluation.
Following a one-day hospital stay, doctors determined he was recovering well enough to return home to Niantic, Connecticut, where he continues to heal.
John said he has already been able to walk during his recovery.
Rare Shark Attack Ends Future Shark Dives
Before entering the water, guides reportedly told the group that Caribbean reef sharks are generally not considered aggressive.
They also advised participants to jump directly into the water rather than easing in slowly to encourage nearby sharks to move away.
Although John is an experienced fisherman who has frequently encountered sand tiger sharks off the Connecticut coast, he admitted this experience completely changed his perspective.
Asked whether he would ever participate in another shark snorkeling excursion, his answer was simple.

“No. Not at all and I won’t do it again.”
According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, Caribbean reef shark attacks are extremely uncommon, with only four documented attacks and no recorded fatalities prior to this incident.
Warm Welcome Home After Scary Ordeal
When John finally returned home, neighbors found a lighthearted way to celebrate his safe return.
Several welcomed him back while wearing shark costumes, bringing smiles after an otherwise traumatic experience. John said he appreciated the gesture and praised his neighbors for helping lift his spirits as he continues recovering from the attack.
While the family’s anniversary trip ended in an unforgettable way, John says he is grateful to be alive and thankful for the quick actions of his family, tour staff, and medical teams that helped save him.
