Grand Junction, Colorado — What began as the mysterious disappearance of a mother and her young daughter quickly became one of Colorado’s most haunting criminal investigations.
For months, family, friends, and investigators searched for answers after 34-year-old Jennifer Blagg and her 6-year-old daughter, Abby, vanished from their home without a trace. But a shocking discovery at a local landfill months later completely changed the direction of the case.
Husband Reported Wife and Daughter Missing
According to investigators, the case began on Nov. 13, 2001, when Michael Blagg said he left for work around 6 a.m., believing his wife and daughter were still at home.
He later told authorities he called the house several times throughout the day, but no one answered.
Growing concerned, Michael returned home early and said he discovered a large pool of blood inside the couple’s bedroom, while Abby’s clothes for school remained laid out untouched.
Jennifer and Abby, however, were gone.
Emergency responders who arrived after Michael’s 911 call described him as emotionally distraught, and he publicly insisted he had no idea what had happened to his family.
At the time, investigators explored multiple possibilities, including whether someone else had entered the property.
Community Searched for Answers
The disappearance shocked Grand Junction, where neighbors struggled to understand how a mother and child could vanish so suddenly.
One nearby resident reported hearing what sounded like several male voices near the family’s backyard on the morning Jennifer and Abby disappeared, prompting investigators to consider whether others may have been involved.
Michael initially cooperated fully with detectives and did not immediately hire an attorney. Friends and relatives also spoke positively about him during the early days of the investigation.
Jennifer’s mother described him as a compassionate husband, while coworkers said he was devoted to Abby and frequently spoke about his family.
Despite those accounts, investigators continued examining every aspect of the case.
Landfill Discovery Changed the Investigation
The investigation took a dramatic turn more than six months later. Authorities discovered Jennifer Blagg’s decomposing body among trash at the Mesa County landfill.
Investigators said her body had been mixed with waste originating from Ametek Dixon, the company where Michael Blagg worked.
Officials also reported that the retainer Jennifer typically wore while sleeping was still in her mouth, helping identify her remains.
Just two days after the discovery, Michael was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, use of a weapon in a violent crime, theft, and abuse of a corpse.
The discovery shifted the investigation from a missing persons case to a homicide prosecution.

Conviction Overturned Before Second Trial
Michael Blagg’s first trial concluded in 2004, when a jury found him guilty of murdering his wife.
However, that conviction was later overturned after it was revealed that a juror had failed to disclose a prior domestic violence incident during jury selection.
The case returned to court years later.
Following a five-week retrial in 2018, jurors again found Michael Blagg guilty of Jennifer’s murder after approximately three days of deliberations.
He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
Abby Blagg Remains Missing
Although Jennifer’s murder has been resolved in court, Abby Blagg has never been located. Because her body has never been found, Michael Blagg was never charged in connection with her disappearance.
More than two decades later, Abby’s fate remains unknown, making her disappearance one of Colorado’s longest-running unsolved missing child cases.
Authorities have continued to seek information over the years, hoping someone may eventually provide answers about what happened to the young girl.
