Indiana Weekend Weather Warning: Storms, Damaging Wind Risk and Canadian Wildfire Smoke Could Affect the State

Indiana Weekend Weather Warning Storms, Damaging Wind Risk and Canadian Wildfire Smoke Could Affect the State

Indianapolis, Indiana — Residents across Indiana are being urged to prepare for a combination of poor air quality, wildfire smoke and multiple rounds of thunderstorms as weather conditions remain unsettled through at least Saturday.

Forecasters say the weekend will feature warm, humid conditions along with scattered rain and storms, while smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to affect air quality across portions of the state.

Air Quality Alert Remains in Effect

An Air Quality Alert continues for parts of Central and Northern Indiana because of low-level wildfire smoke drifting into the region.

Forecasters say smoke concentrations could create unhealthy air conditions, particularly for children, older adults and people with asthma, heart disease or other respiratory conditions.

The greatest impact is expected during Friday morning, although forecast models suggest the smoke could gradually shift northeast later in the day, allowing conditions to improve across much of Indiana.

Even so, residents sensitive to air pollution are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activity if smoke becomes noticeable.

Friday Brings Scattered Storms and Humid Conditions

Friday’s weather will remain warm and muggy, with afternoon highs reaching the upper 80s.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, although rainfall amounts will vary significantly from one location to another.

Some communities may receive heavy downpours, while others could see very little rainfall.

While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters say an isolated strong storm cannot be ruled out, bringing brief periods of gusty winds and heavy rain.

Friday night will remain warm and humid, with temperatures only falling into the lower 70s under partly cloudy skies.

Saturday Could Bring Stronger Storms

Weather conditions are expected to become more active again on Saturday.

Afternoon highs will climb into the upper 80s to around 90 degrees, with another round of showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening.

Forecasters say a few storms could become strong, producing damaging wind gusts as a cold front moves through the region.

The Storm Prediction Center currently places portions of Indiana under a Level 1 and Level 2 severe weather risk, meaning isolated severe thunderstorms are possible.

Anyone with outdoor plans Saturday should closely monitor the forecast and be prepared to seek shelter if severe weather develops.

Cooler Air Arrives, but Smoke Concerns Continue

By Sunday, temperatures are expected to ease slightly, with highs settling into the mid-80s.

However, meteorologists are also monitoring the possibility of additional Canadian wildfire smoke moving south if winds shift from the north.

While the exact track of the smoke remains uncertain, forecasters say it could once again reduce air quality across parts of Indiana.

Another opportunity for showers and thunderstorms is expected late Monday into Tuesday, followed by the possibility of cooler and drier weather during the middle of next week if current forecast trends continue.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on both weather forecasts and air quality conditions as changing winds and storm activity could quickly affect conditions across the state.
