Cambridge, Minnesota — A Minnesota man is facing serious criminal charges after prosecutors alleged he intentionally set fire to his former girlfriend’s home, destroying the property while her husband and his service dog were inside.
The suspect, a 35-year-old man from Shoreview, has been charged with first-degree arson in connection with a May 6 fire that leveled the Cambridge home of Travis and Taylor Wilken, according to a criminal complaint filed in Isanti County.
The allegations have raised concerns about the potential dangers associated with domestic violence-related cases, particularly when restraining orders have previously been issued.

According to court documents, Travis Wilken was inside the residence with his service dog, Sunny, watching television when he noticed signs of smoke.
After investigating, he discovered flames inside the home and immediately attempted to extinguish the fire himself.
Wilken, a Marine combat veteran, reportedly fought the blaze before emergency crews arrived. Despite his efforts, the fire spread rapidly and the home was eventually declared a total loss.
Fortunately, both Wilken and his dog escaped the burning residence safely.
The destruction, however, left the family without their home and triggered an extensive investigation into the cause of the fire.
Investigators Say Fire Was Intentionally Set
Authorities later determined the blaze was not accidental.
According to prosecutors, investigators discovered evidence suggesting the use of an accelerant, leading them to conclude the fire had been deliberately started.
Witnesses told law enforcement that shortly before the fire began, a man carrying a plastic jug approached nearby residents and allegedly asked which house belonged to the Wilken family.
Those observations became a key part of the investigation. As detectives gathered evidence, attention soon focused on an individual with a prior connection to the family.
Former Boyfriend Identified by Homeowner
Court records state that Taylor Wilken later reviewed a photograph taken by a responding police officer and identified the individual as a former boyfriend.

According to the complaint, Taylor had previously obtained a restraining order against the man. Investigators later arrested the suspect in Chisago County on unrelated warrants.
Authorities reported noticing a strong smell of gasoline coming from the suspect’s belongings at the time of his arrest, a detail that was documented as part of the investigation.
The suspect has not been convicted of the allegations, and the charges remain accusations that must be proven in court.
Second Fire Investigation Raises Additional Questions
Prosecutors also referenced a separate investigation that occurred roughly one month after the Cambridge fire.
According to court documents, witnesses reported seeing the same suspect near another suspicious house fire in East Bethel, Minnesota.
Authorities said the second incident involved another individual who had reportedly obtained a restraining order against the suspect after previously alleging threats to their life.
During the East Bethel investigation, law enforcement recovered a laundry detergent container that allegedly contained gasoline.
Officials have not publicly announced additional charges related to that incident, but investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding both cases.

The arson charge filed in Isanti County represents a significant felony offense under Minnesota law.
As the legal process continues, prosecutors will seek to present evidence supporting their allegations, while the defendant will have the opportunity to respond to the charges in court.
