Lake Jackson, Texas — A Brazoria County sheriff’s deputy has been fired following the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Texas State University student, a case that has drawn growing public attention as investigators work to determine exactly what happened during the encounter.
Sheriff Bo Stallman announced Tuesday that Deputy Kevin Tippit was terminated from his position following an internal investigation into the death of John Mendoza Jr., a freshman at Texas State University who was killed on June 1.
The decision comes as state investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred after a late-night pursuit in Lake Jackson, a city located south of Houston.
Deputy Fired Following Internal Investigation
According to Sheriff Stallman, the week-long review found policy violations involving the handling and discharge of Tippit’s firearm.
In a video statement, Stallman emphasized the responsibility that comes with law enforcement authority and said the decision was based on information gathered during the agency’s investigation.
“The authority that is entrusted to law enforcement officers is extraordinary, and with that authority comes a responsibility to exercise sound judgment, follow policy and uphold the standards that are expected by this profession,” Stallman said.
The sheriff added that the termination was specifically related to policy violations involving the deputy’s firearm.
However, Stallman stressed that the employment decision is separate from the ongoing criminal investigation and should not be viewed as a determination of criminal liability.
Shooting Followed Brief Vehicle Pursuit
Authorities said the incident began shortly after midnight when Tippit attempted to conduct a traffic stop involving Mendoza.
According to the sheriff’s office, Mendoza allegedly did not stop and instead continued driving for approximately 1.3 miles before arriving at his residence in a nearby neighborhood.
Investigators said Mendoza parked inside an attached garage and exited his vehicle. It was during the encounter that followed that Tippit discharged his firearm.
Mendoza was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office has not publicly released additional details about what occurred in the moments immediately before the shooting.
Meanwhile, Mendoza’s family has disputed parts of the official account, saying the teenager was simply returning home after visiting a nearby park.
Family Calls for Accountability
The death of the 18-year-old student has devastated family members and friends. Mendoza had recently begun studying management at Texas State University and was preparing for his future when his life was cut short.
His sister, Allyson Mendoza, has publicly called for accountability and justice through an online fundraising campaign established in his memory.
“Today, our family is asking for your support to help raise awareness, seek accountability, and honor the life of my little brother, John Gabriel Mendoza Jr.”
Allyson alleged that the deputy followed her brother home and shot him without warning before emergency responders arrived. She also raised concerns about the amount of time it took for medical assistance to reach the scene.
“Those lost minutes mattered. Where was the sense of urgency?” she wrote.
The family has continued to demand answers as investigators review the evidence.
State Investigation Continues
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting alongside the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials have indicated that the case will eventually be presented to a grand jury for review once investigators complete their work.
Brazoria County Criminal District Attorney Tom Selleck said a comprehensive investigation is underway and noted that forensic testing and evidence analysis could take several months to complete.
Sheriff Stallman also offered condolences to Mendoza’s family during his announcement.
“John Gabriel Mendoza Jr. lost his life, your family lost a son, friends lost someone they loved,” Stallman said. “Your family’s loss is permanent and your grief is real.”
As the investigation moves forward, both the Mendoza family and the community continue to await answers about the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.
