Heartbroken Florida Firefighter Shares Emotional Tribute to Wife After Her Death From Leukemia

Miami-Dade County, Florida — A South Florida firefighter is remembering the love, laughter, and strength of his wife after she lost her battle with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia, leaving behind a newborn daughter and a family determined to carry her memory forward.

The heartbreaking loss has touched many across the community, where friends, colleagues, and supporters have rallied around Miami-Dade firefighter Jean and his family following the death of his wife, Santina.

While grieving the loss of his partner, Jean is also focused on caring for their newborn daughter, who remains in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Doctors Fought to Save Both Mother and Baby

According to Jean, doctors faced an incredibly difficult situation after Santina was diagnosed with leukemia during her pregnancy.

Medical teams worked to carefully balance the health of both mother and child, waiting until the baby reached a safer stage of development before proceeding with delivery and treatment efforts.

Jean praised the medical staff who worked tirelessly to help his family through the crisis.

“Fortunately, with a good team at Baptist, they waited to a good gestational age so that way they can get our baby and try to save my wife,” Jean said.

Initially, there was hope that both mother and daughter would recover.

“They did great on both ends. Everything was on an uprise, but then the leukemia was aggressive, so it overwhelmed her eventually.”

Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses, Santina ultimately lost her battle with the disease.

Family Kept Their Struggle Private

Throughout much of the medical ordeal, the family chose to keep their situation private. While they focused on treatment and supporting one another, close friends quietly stepped in to help behind the scenes.

Those friends organized an online fundraiser to provide financial support for Jean and his daughters during an incredibly difficult period.

The campaign has since raised more than $100,000, a reflection of the support and compassion shown by the community. Jean said he has been deeply moved by the generosity of those who offered prayers, encouragement, and assistance.

“The prayers was enough. And I know it’s working to get us up every day after this,” Jean said.

“I’ll figure out the word I could put it into to tell you how much I appreciate that. But just thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Remembering a Life Filled With Laughter

As he reflects on their years together, Jean said the memories that stand out most are the moments of happiness they shared every day.

Whether facing challenges or enjoying ordinary moments, laughter was a constant part of their relationship.

“Every day she laughed. Every single day,” he said.

“Hardest day, best day, quiet day. If we only said three words, it was a joke that made us laugh. So yeah, my laughing partner for sure.”

Jean said that from December until her passing, he and Santina continued finding reasons to smile and laugh together despite the difficulties they faced.

Those memories now serve as a source of comfort as he navigates life without her.

Looking Ahead for Their Newborn Daughter

A photograph taken before Santina’s death shows her holding and feeding the couple’s newborn daughter, a moment that has become especially meaningful for the family.

The baby, Aniyah, remains in the NICU but is expected to come home within the next few weeks. Jean said his focus now is on being there for his children and honoring the legacy his wife leaves behind.

He also wrote a letter expressing gratitude to hospital staff and fellow firefighters who stood beside him throughout the ordeal.

While no amount of support can erase the loss, Jean said the assistance from friends, co-workers, and strangers will help him spend more time caring for his daughters as the family begins the difficult process of healing.
