Murrieta, California — A Riverside County animal cruelty investigation has resulted in multiple felony charges after police discovered dozens of dogs living in alarming conditions, including 21 animals locked inside the cargo area of a U-Haul truck with little access to food, water, or fresh air.
The disturbing case began on May 1 when Murrieta police responded to reports of an abandoned vehicle parked on the 41000 block of Guava Street. What officers found upon arrival quickly escalated into a large-scale animal rescue operation.
Officers Hear Barking Coming From Inside Truck
According to the Murrieta Police Department, officers arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports that two dogs had been left inside the cab of a U-Haul truck.
While inspecting the vehicle, officers heard numerous dogs barking from the enclosed cargo area. When authorities opened the rear compartment, they discovered 21 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels packed inside the truck.
Police said the cargo area lacked ventilation and air conditioning, creating potentially dangerous conditions for the animals. Several of the dogs appeared neglected, with matted fur and limited access to basic necessities.
Investigators later learned the animals had reportedly been left inside the enclosed vehicle for several hours before they were discovered.
Several Dogs Were Pregnant
Authorities said some of the rescued dogs were pregnant, adding to concerns about their welfare and overall health.
Animal control personnel assisted officers in safely removing each dog from the truck and transporting them to a secure location for evaluation.
Officials noted that despite the difficult conditions, all of the animals were successfully rescued without further incident. The discovery prompted an immediate investigation into the ownership and care of the animals.
Owner Arrives With Additional Dogs
While officers were still processing the scene, the dogs’ owner reportedly arrived in an SUV. According to police, the vehicle contained 12 additional dogs, bringing the total number of animals involved in the case to 33.
The owner was taken into custody and arrested on allegations related to animal cruelty, animal abandonment, and leaving animals unattended inside a vehicle.
Authorities have not publicly released the suspect’s identity.
The case was later submitted to prosecutors for review.
Prosecutors File Multiple Felony Charges
On May 27, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office formally charged the suspect with 21 felony counts of animal cruelty along with two misdemeanor offenses.
The charges stem from the conditions in which the animals were allegedly being kept and transported. Animal welfare advocates say cases involving large numbers of animals can be especially challenging because rescued pets often require extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term care.

Dogs Now Receiving Care and Rehabilitation
Following the rescue, all 33 dogs were transported to Animal Friends of the Valleys in Lake Elsinore.
Veterinary staff evaluated the animals and began providing medical care and treatment where necessary. Officials said the dogs will remain under the organization’s care while they continue recovering and undergoing rehabilitation.
The Murrieta Police Department also acknowledged the role community members and animal welfare supporters played in bringing attention to the situation.
In a statement, the department thanked local residents and animal advocates whose assistance helped ensure the animals were rescued safely.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting suspected animal neglect and abuse, particularly during warmer months when temperatures inside enclosed vehicles can quickly become dangerous or even deadly for pets.
As the criminal case moves forward, authorities say their focus remains on ensuring the rescued dogs receive the care they need and helping them recover from their ordeal.
