Belcamp, Maryland — A heartbreaking house fire in Maryland claimed the lives of three family pets after investigators determined that a dog accidentally turned on a kitchen toaster while the homeowners were away.
The fire broke out Friday evening at a single-family home on Foxglove Court in Belcamp, leaving the residence with extensive fire, smoke and water damage. Although no people were injured, the family suffered the tragic loss of several beloved pets.
Fire Crews Responded Within Minutes
According to the Abingdon Fire Company, firefighters were dispatched to the home shortly after 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a residential fire.
Emergency crews arrived quickly and managed to bring the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes.
Officials said the homeowners were not inside the residence when the fire started, preventing any human injuries.
However, neighbors rushed to help and managed to rescue two dogs from the burning home before firefighters arrived.
Three Family Pets Did Not Survive
Despite the rescue efforts, authorities said one dog and two cats died in the fire.
The family’s bearded dragon was initially feared dead but was later discovered alive inside the home. The reptile survived after receiving 24 hours of critical veterinary care, according to officials.
The incident has left the family mourning the loss of three pets while caring for the surviving animals.
Ring Camera Helped Reveal How the Fire Started
Fire investigators determined that the blaze began inside the kitchen before spreading throughout the house.
According to deputy state fire marshals, one of the family’s dogs jumped onto the kitchen counter and accidentally activated the toaster, which ignited nearby combustible materials.
Ironically, officials said the same dog that unintentionally switched on the appliance was among the two rescued by neighbors.
Investigators were able to confirm the sequence of events with the help of footage captured by the home’s Ring security camera.
The video reportedly showed the dog climbing onto the counter and pawing at various items before the toaster was accidentally turned on.
Officials said the footage played a key role in helping investigators identify the exact origin of the fire.
Officials Rule Blaze Accidental
Following their investigation, deputy state fire marshals officially ruled the fire accidental.
Authorities said the home sustained extensive fire, soot, smoke and water damage, leaving much of the property heavily damaged.
Officials estimate the blaze caused approximately $150,000 in structural damage and an additional $50,000 in damage to personal belongings, bringing the total estimated loss to around $200,000.
Fire officials often remind homeowners to keep combustible items away from kitchen appliances and unplug countertop devices when they are not in use, particularly when pets are left home alone.
While the fire has been ruled accidental, the incident serves as a tragic reminder that even everyday household appliances can become dangerous under unexpected circumstances.
