East St. Louis, Illinois — Five members of the same family were killed and two others were injured in what authorities have described as a targeted mass shooting that unfolded across multiple locations in the East St. Louis area, leading to the arrests of two teenage suspects.
According to the Illinois State Police, the shootings prompted a large-scale investigation before officers located and stopped the suspects’ vehicle later that day.
Authorities emphasized that the violence was believed to be targeted and said there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
Five Victims Identified by Authorities
Illinois State Police identified the five people who lost their lives as:
- Patricia A. May, 74
- Cherie L. May, 49
- Devin D. May, 24
- Shania W. Thompson, 25
- Quentin L. Thompson, 21
Officials have not disclosed the exact family relationships among the victims, but confirmed they were members of the same family.
In addition to the five fatalities, two other relatives were injured during the shootings. Authorities have not released details about their conditions.
Two Teenagers Arrested After Police Pursuit
Following the shootings, investigators identified a suspect vehicle and initiated efforts to locate it.
According to Illinois State Police, officers successfully stopped the vehicle by using a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, leading to the arrests of a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old.
Investigators believe at least one of the teenagers played a direct role in the shootings, according to local media reports citing law enforcement officials.
Because both suspects are juveniles, authorities have not publicly released their identities.
Police Say Community Is Not Facing an Ongoing Threat
Following the arrests, Illinois State Police reassured residents that investigators do not believe there is any continuing danger to the community.
Authorities stated that they are working closely with the State’s Attorney’s Office as prosecutors prepare potential criminal charges against the two teenage suspects.
Officials have not yet announced what specific charges the suspects may face.

During a press conference, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly condemned the deadly attack while expressing confidence in the community’s resilience.
“It’s terrible. It’s evil. But it will not keep this city down.”
