HIALEAH, Fla. — A routine trip outside to pick up a food delivery turned into a terrifying emergency for a 19-year-old woman who says her Samsung phone exploded on her bed and sparked a fire that destroyed her bedroom.
Maya Garcia said she left her Samsung Galaxy A15 on her bed while she stepped outside to collect her DoorDash order. She had no idea that just minutes away from her bedroom, a potentially devastating fire was about to begin.
“It was terrifying,” Garcia said.
Explosion Heard Just Minutes After She Left
According to Garcia and her father, she had only been outside briefly when they suddenly heard what sounded like an explosion coming from inside the home.
Garcia described the noise as a powerful “boom” followed by what sounded like glass shattering and a swooshing sound.
“I’m sitting there and I hear an explosion behind me,” Garcia said.
When the family realized what was happening, Garcia’s bedroom was already filling with flames and smoke.
“You couldn’t see inside the house — flames, smoke,” she said. “I’m panicking, but I’m trying to stay calm.”
The fire rapidly transformed the bedroom, leaving much of the space destroyed.
Bedroom Left in Ruins
The aftermath was devastating for Garcia. Her bedroom was left heavily damaged, with the remains of the phone reportedly still visible among the ash. Beyond the physical damage, Garcia said childhood memories and personal belongings were destroyed in the blaze.
The incident has also raised questions about what caused the fire and whether the phone’s battery or another factor was responsible.
The electrical outlet in Garcia’s room reportedly showed no visible signs of an electrical problem, according to the report.
Investigators Have Not Finished Their Report
Officials said their report was not yet complete, meaning the final cause of the fire had not been formally established at the time of reporting.
Garcia and her father said they were told by members of the arson team that the phone was responsible for the fire. That account could ultimately be clarified when investigators complete their examination and issue their final findings.
For Garcia, however, the experience has already changed how she looks at what happened during those few minutes.
A DoorDash Delay Could Have Changed Everything
Garcia said she cannot stop thinking about what might have happened if her food delivery had arrived at a different time. Because she had stepped outside to collect her order, she was away from the bedroom when the phone allegedly exploded.
Had the delivery been delayed, Garcia believes the situation could have turned out very differently.
The possibility that she could have been inside the bedroom when the fire started makes the incident even more frightening for her and her family.
Despite losing her belongings and watching her room go up in flames, Garcia said she is ultimately thankful that she survived.
‘I Am Extremely Grateful’
When asked how she felt after the frightening incident, Garcia summed it up with one word: “Grateful.”
“I am extremely grateful,” she said. “What matters is I’m alive here today.”
The fire remains under investigation, and the final arson report is still pending. Until investigators complete their work, the exact circumstances surrounding the phone and the fire remain subject to official determination.
For Garcia, the experience serves as a frightening reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can become an emergency.
